The Kiddy Relax Pro is one of a range of infant car seats from Kiddy, a German company that has been producing car seats since 1976. Kiddy’s gaining a reputation for the innovative nature of its car seats, as many of them have unique features that make them stand out from others on the market. For Kiddy’s seats for older children, it’s the special cushion that fits across the child’s lap. The infant car seats are notable for the high level of side impact protection they offer, and the fact that the entire headrest can be adjusted according to your baby’s height.

What we love

As soon as you take your first look at the Kiddy Relax Pro, you know it’s a high quality car seat. Everything about it is luxurious, from the ergonomically shaped carry handle to the thick, soft fabric covering the whole seat. My nephew, Freddie, is only 7 weeks old, and he looks incredibly cosy and comfortable snuggled into this car seat.

The most obvious thing that makes the Kiddy Relax Pro stand out is the double side-impact protection around the head and shoulders. This consists of two deep, padded wings that curl around the sides of your baby’s head, and are filled with a light honeycomb material that’s unique to Kiddy seats. It looks like the kind of side impact protection you normally only see in seats for older children. The reason that it’s possible for Kiddy to use this technology in an infant carrier is the clever design of the handle on the back of the seat, which allows you to adjust the height of the wings to seven different levels. This means that from when your baby is a tiny newborn right up until he’s at the maximum size/weight for the seat, the side impact wings can be moved into the exact place to protect his head and shoulders.

For Freddie, I slid the handle down to the second-lowest setting, and it was a perfect fit. I remember with my own three babies, making that first trip home from the hospital and feeling they looked so tiny and vulnerable in their car seat. With the Relax Pro, I feel very reassured that Freddie is both snug and completely safe.

The 5-point harness is also connected to the headrest, so it’s adjusted at the same time to make sure it’s in the perfect position for your baby’s safety and comfort.

This seat is also very light, at only 3.4kg. Obviously this makes it great for you, as it’s a lot easier to carry your baby in and out of the car, but it’s also a safety feature, as the lighter the seat, the less it moves in the event of a collision.

The padding on the car seat covers make it seem like a very cosy ride, and even the fabric of the hood is thick and high quality.

Overall, the Kiddy Relax Pro feels like a high-end product, and leaves you feeling in no doubt about what you’re getting for your money.

What to watch out for

This car seat isn’t the cheapest on the market, but having said that, it’s not the most expensive either, and you do feel you’re getting a high-quality product.
The other issue is the Kiddy Relax Pro isn’t travel system compatible, so it isn’t for you if you want a car seat that can click onto your buggy.

The Relax Pro doesn’t come with an in-car base, so you have to fit the seat with your car’s own seatbelt each time you use it. However, this is very quick and simple to do.

Who is the Kiddy Relax Pro car seat best for ?

Parents who want a seat with safety features that go the extra mile, and don’t feel that travel system compatibility is a priority.
