Pros

  • Forward or rear facing, travel system compatible, smooth ride, carrycot can be used for overnight sleeping, durable, quality materials

Cons

  • While there's a choice of travel system options, one really stands out above the others, though all are a little heavy

The Slalom R, new in 2010 for Jané, is an all-terrain 3-wheeler that can be used as a rear or forward facing buggy. It offers a smooth ride and numerous travel system combos, making it ideal for those after a from-birth solution.

If you think the Jané Slalom R buggy sounds like a familiar name, you’re not wrong. While it is a new buggy for 2010, it has evolved from the successful Slalom Pro buggy. The big difference between these two 3-wheelers is that the Slalom R has a reversible seat, hence the “R” in its name.

The Slalom R is a travel system compatible option, and can be teamed with the Matrix Light car seat to make the Slalom Matrix Light Travel System, Jané’s Transporter carrycot and Strata car seat to make the Slalom Formula Travel System or just with the Transport or Strata alone. You can also buy the Micro Folding carrycot, which can double as your baby’s bed for the first 6 months of their life.

The Slalom R boasts a front brake that’s controlled from the handlebar, something I (being a city mum) had no use for, though my adventurous friends tell me this is a handy addition when heading down steep hills. The buggy also features a 360-dregree swivel front wheel, reclining seat, height adjustable handlebar, footrest, raincover and pump. The wheels are quick-release, too, for a more compact folded size.

What we love

The Slalom R is light and incredibly easy to manoeuvre. The handling is so smooth. While I’m not a runner, I imagine if you did get active your baby would remain completely undisturbed, whatever the conditions. It is specifically designed to handle all terrains, and has shock absorbing pneumatic tyres and adjustable rear spring suspension to do so.

The buggy feels stable, sturdy and safe. It’s also easy to fold with a bit of practice, and can easily get crammed into your car boot.

The choice of travel systems is also good – you can pick what would work best for you, though the stand-out of them is probably the Slalom Matrix Light Travel System because of this car seats versatility.

The instructions are brilliant - clear, concise and easy to follow.

What to watch out for

As a buggy, the Slalom R performs well. The niggles will really depend on whether you make it a travel system, and which car seat you choose to combine it with.

Who is the Jané Slalom R buggy best for?

Families who want to head off the well trodden path.

MadeForMums verdict

If you’re looking for a buggy that feels safe and robust, that can be crammed into the boot and that has the ability to handle all conditions, the Slalom R buggy is worth looking at. It’s travel system compatible, can be used as a rear or forward facing buggy, and offers a super smooth ride.
