Mima Zigi review

The new Zigi is no exception. It looks like no other compact pushchair out there - from it’s Russian-doll-style extendable hood, to the quirky see-through wheels, its sleek and rounded chassis, smooth fold and even the stylish rain cover and mosquito net.

It is available in understated colours, a khaki green, charcoal/black and a navy blue. The Zigi is “for refined globetrotters”, says the brand. With an RRP of £650, it is firmly at the high end of the compact stroller market, beating the Mutsy Nexo (£279), the Babyzen Yoyo (£369), the UPPAbaby Minu (£450) and others hands down with its mildly eye-watering price. Most expensive luxury pushchairs

First impressions:

When I saw the box, I thought it was too small to house a stroller, so I was very impressed. We tested the Zigi in silver and charcoal with black wheels.

This pushchair is aimed at the higher end of the buying market, and it was great that it was already assembled and ready to use - no fiddling about with wheels, attachments and so on, It has simple two-harness strap lock, which is very practical. Overall, I thought it was nice and lightweight and looked good.

What did you think of the fold?

I think the Mima Zigi boasts one of the simplest folds on the market. You hook your finger through a loop, pull once and it collapses into a small manageable folded position.

Is the Mima Zigi compact enough to fit in the airplane overhead compartment?

Here's the thing, it's compact enough to be accepted as cabin luggage with most airlines, although, as I found out, not on Jet2.com! So it’s always worth double checking.

Saying that, when folded, it was so compact it fitted in the wardrobe in our room with space to spare, without causing any disruption and freeing up much needed floor space. The super compact fold actually measures 56x45x25cm.

How does the Mima Zigi compare to other buggies you’ve used?

This was the first time I used a pushchair abroad and the Mima Zigi was definitely lighter and easier to manoeuvre than ones I used previously. I had to do a lot of lifting and carrying at the resort and at the airport, so that was very handy.

How easy was the Mima Zigi to fit in the boot of your car alongside luggage?

This was a winner for me. We managed to fit in two large suitcases, two smaller cases, hand luggage and there was still enough room for the stroller when folded and in its case. It was a great pushchair to carry due to the way it folded down.

How easy was the Zigi to push in the airport?

We flew out of Stansted Airport to get to Lanzarote. As Stanstead is quite a small airport, the check desk and security level are all on one floor, so quite easy to navigate. The push was great, nice and smooth, and navigating the security lanes was a breeze.

What I loved was how easy it was to open and close the pushchair when asked, without having to fiddle about or take pieces off. The Mima Zigi boasts that it is light and compact enough to be used as hand luggage, but unfortunately Jet2.com do not accept pushchairs as hand luggage.

But we were able to take the stroller with us right up until the steps of the plane and board. It was then tagged and we met it again when we landed. This worked very well and was a great help with very fidgety 2-year-old who tends to run everywhere.

How was the Mima Zigi on arrival in Lanzarote and in transit to the hotel?

On arrival we took a short walk to passport control and my pushchair was the first thing I picked up. What I loved was the canvas cover that protected the chair in cargo and was very easy to spot on arrival. The transfer to the hotel was really easy, as the pushchair is so easy to fold to place in the coach’s hold.

What was like using the Mima Zigi at the resort?

We stayed at the H10 Rubicon Palace resort in Lanzarote - absolutely stunning with an excellent kids club and two children’s pools. It was a wonderful family friendly hotel.

Unfortunately the hotel fell massively short in terms of step-free access. There were only two lifts that were in the main concourse lobby and only took you to reception and the two floors above, which was the games room and disco hall. The actual resort was a series of individual two-level apartment blocks. I was in a 1st floor apartment that could only be accessed by two flights of stairs.

But the stroller didn’t let me down. I often managed to lift the stroller with Clay strapped in safely and carry them both up the stairs. On the days that I chose to close the pushchair and walk down the stairs, the fold work amazingly. The handle had enough grip for me to carry it down stairs while holding Clay’s hand.

The best lighweight buggies

At poolside the stroller attracted admiring glances. One father asked me name, price and where to buy it! What was great about using the stroller poolside was the extended canopy that completely protected Clay from the sun, it also has a peephole to keep an eye on your little one when walking. The pushchair fitted nicely in between sun loungers without blocking anyone’s way.

On the terrains around the resort, which included uneven crazy paving, flat stone surface and marble flooring, the Zigi handled very well. The small but durable wheels made for a smooth ride.

What makes the Mima Zigi good for travelling?

The Zigi is so easy to fold, which is great when going on transport. It has a compact footprint and is easy to store away. It also has a great hood that provides fantastic coverage from the elements, and you can also buy a mosquito net, which fits the stroller perfectly. It is all really well designed and easy to use - a doddle when enjoying foreign climes.

What did you think of the size of the seat unit?

I think the seat unit size is ok for now, but luckily for me I have quite a small 2-year-old. I do think it should be a little bit higher and the seat slightly bigger to accommodate a larger child, although it is tested to 17kg, which is more than many compact rivals (although the Babyzen Yoyo is also up to 17kg).

Is the seat comfortable for your little one?

The seat is slightly lower than I anticipated, and it is only world-facing. Also, there are only two recline positions.

What did you think of the brake?

The brake works well, nice and sharp and is located at the base of the stroller in the middle of the rear axle. It’s very easy to use.

How does the handlebar feel?

The handle bar is adjustable which is great, and features a sleek, faux leather design. It’s very nice to the touch.

How easy can you access the basket?

Unfortunately the basket is another downside. It is very small and quite finicky to use. There is a separate pouch to house the rain cover (or other bits and bobs) at the back end of the basket.

This actually becomes a bit of a hindrance because it almost doubles up as a protective flap for the basket. So the basket is a bit hard to access, not great for quickly throwing a few holiday essential into it when heading poolside.

MadeForMums verdict:

Mima Zigi is a wonderful lightweight stroller that I would strongly recommend, particularly when looking for a pushchair to use on a holiday with a toddler. It’s a modern stroller that successfully combines practicality without compromising on style. I love the way it looks and how lightweight it is.

The downside to this product is the lack of accessories supplied, particularly considering the £650 price tag. I expected much more than what was inside the box. Mima should maybe offer a complimentary cup holder and parasol or footmuff depending on the season. However, the Zigi is strong, looks good, and is a very well put together stroller - although not sure how it would fare if you had a larger toddler.
