45 words your child will learn to read first
The key high-frequency words your child will be taught to read in reception
Your child will start a reading programme as soon as they start in Reception. Children will have already been introduced to letters during pre-school or nursery, and may even have been taught some phonics.
The Reception teacher will concentrate on what are called high-frequency words – words that are occur commonly and are key to understanding simple text. Schools in the UK teach 45 high-frequency words in Reception, and a further 113 in Years 1 and 2.
A great way to help your child with these key words is to print or write them out and pop a few up on the fridge or point them out when they appear in books you are reading. Encourage your child to spot all the times the word ‘the’ or ‘we’ appear.
