Holidaying with little children can be a daunting prospect. Let’s face it, leaving the house sometimes feels like a polar expedition! But a trip to beautiful Mesmear on the wild north coast of Cornwall will allay all your fears and convince you that it is possible to have kids – and enjoy a holiday.
There are three converted properties set amongst open farmland, all with airy open plan living and the style and luxury of a boutique hotel. We stayed in The Barn, which has its own private garden and a BBQ for al fresco dining. Parents in need of some TLC will appreciate the wonderful attention to detail, the slightly warmed fluffy white towels, spa-like bathrooms, calming bedrooms with Egyptian cotton bed-linen and high spec kitchens. Yet with everything from high chairs and travel cots to buckets and spades, toys and books galore – there’s no need to worry about packing all that baby kit.
Our three and five-year-olds loved feeding the Rose family’s chickens and watching the newest arrivals, five alpacas. There’s also a games room for older siblings, but most wonderful of all is the heated swimming pool with loungers, available between Easter and October.
We spent the days visiting nearby beaches including fashionable Rock and Polzeath, just a five minute drive away. We also walked along the spectacular coastal path to Tintagel castle – said to be the birthplace of King Arthur. But you can even walk over the fields to the beautiful coastline, which dips down to bays including Lundy and Ephaven.
After a blustery cliff walk or a day at the beach the true highlight for us was coming home to the lap of luxury. My husband and I took it in turns to have a dip in the warm pool, while the other did bedtime – then come back in for a warm shower, some fresh fish bought from pretty fishing village of Port Issac and a large glass of wine. Heaven!
