Step 2 Sift the flour into a mixing bowl. Step 3 Cut the butter into pieces, add to the flour and rub in with your fingertips until the mixture has the consistency of fine breadcrumbs. Step 4 Add the grated cheese and pepper. Step 5 Beat the egg and add gradually to the dough – just enough to make it stiff. Step 6 Wrap the dough in greaseproof paper and pop it in the fridge for 10 minutes. Step 7 Lightly flour a clean work surface. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough into a rectangle about 1 cm thick. Cut into strips (or straws) about 14cm x 1.5cm. Step 8 Carefully spread a thin layer of Marmite onto each straw. Step 9 Either twist the straws in the middle or leave them straight, and place them onto a baking tray. Make sure they’re not touching one another. Step 10 Cook in the oven for 10-15 minutes, or until golden brown. Then cool on a wire rack. Warm the Marmite slightly to make spreading easier. Try using small cookie cutters to make shaped savoury biscuits: ideal for lunch boxes.
