They say that a new haircut can make you feel better about yourself, but for 3-year-old Maddox Tallowin, chopping his hair into a trendy mohawk style ended up saving his life.

After taking to the scissors and giving Maddox a David Beckham style hairdo with a spiky mohican and shaved sides, his parents discovered strange lumps on the back of his head. “It didn’t feel right, so we made an appointment the same day and got him to the doctors,” Maddox’s dad Ben told the Telegraph.

They rushed him to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge where doctors diagnosed Maddox with leukaemia. He was put on an immediate course of chemotherapy.

Maddox is now in remission but will continue his treatment for a further three years. “I feel so lucky we found it when we did. The doctors said that often it isn’t picked up until the child is unwell, so we were really fortunate.”
