  • Why a baby carrier could be for you

Carriers offer a hands-free way of carrying your baby, with the bonus of keeping your baby close. Back carriers are great for parents who like to head places a buggy would struggle to go, whether this is an epic mountain trek or just the local market! Of course carriers – especially front carriers - can be used for more than just transport, and are great for getting things done around the house or soothing a fractious baby.

Baby carriers are also worth a shot if you’re interested in baby slings, but feel a little daunted by how to wear them.  Slings are a wonderful way to carry your baby around. But it's vital to position your baby safely - we explain the right way and wrong ways here

Nearly all carriers keep your baby in an upright position. They tend to have more structure than a sling with some featuring an actual frame. Others have backpack-like padding and straps, so adjustments can be made easily and you can feel more confident the carrier is position correctly on your body.

The carrier you choose will depend on your needs, so before you buy anything, click through to see 11 of the best front and back carrier options around, and don't miss our buyer's guide to baby carriers.

  • Thule Sapling Elite Carrier, £259.99

Thule is a name more familiar to most of us for their range of automotive carriages, storage products; roof bars, roof boxes, cycle carriers and the like.

But that type of fixing, securing and strapping know-how has plenty of other applications, and carrying that most precious cargo of all – children – was a logical move for the company.   Hence the Thule Sapling Elite - a back carrier that is suitable from 7kg (6 months) to a massive 22kg (5 years).

It comes complete with a fully adjustable back panel and hip belt, child viewing mirror, removable backpack and roomy hip belt pockets, mesh pockets, hydration reservoir sleeve, load stabiliser straps, sunshade, dual access and removable stirrups - phew, that's a lot.

Our MFM mum loved it and gave the carrier 4.5 stars out of 5 in the review
