Pros

Cons

BabyBjörn is a big name in the world of baby gear, but there’s more to the Swedish brand than bouncers and carriers. New to its roster of products is the BabyBjörn Baby Crib – a stylish 2-in-1 cot that transforms as your child grows, designed to work first as a newborn bassinet and later as a larger crib for older babies and toddlers.

With an RRP of £439, it sits at the higher end of the crib market, which isn’t surprising – BabyBjörn is a premium baby brand, and here you’re essentially paying for two products in one. Plus, the mattress, mattress topper and sheet are all included.

Instead of wooden slats, it has soft mesh sides and an integrated mattress that can be positioned higher for newborns, then lowered as your baby grows.

We tested the Baby Crib with a newborn baby, using it for overnight sleep and daytime naps during the first weeks at home.

About our parent tester

How easy is the BabyBjörn Baby Crib to assemble?

Putting the crib together was an absolute breeze. It took 10-15 minutes and was an easy solo job.

The manual clearly labelled all the parts, then broke down the steps with clear, well-illustrated diagrams. The other big win was that no tools were needed.

How firm is the BabyBjörn Baby Crib mattress?

Once assembled, I tested the mattress by pressing my hand into the centre and edges. I felt reassured by its firmness: it resisted pressure well and sprang quickly back into shape, which gave me confidence when using it for my newborn.

How easy is it to access your baby in the BabyBjörn Baby Crib?

In bassinet mode, the mattress was a good height for me to quickly settle my baby or lift her out. One caveat for newborn parents, however, is that although it functions like a newborn bassinet, it does not have drop-down sides and is not designed to sit directly next to your bed. The manual recommends leaving a gap of at least 15cm between the crib and an adult bed.

The lower position seemed a reasonable height for a baby who is able to sit up by themselves, too, which BabyBjörn suggests is usually around 5 months old.

How comfortable does the BabyBjörn Baby Crib seem for your baby?

I’m lucky enough to have a baby who settles quickly, and she seemed very comfortable in the BabyBjörn Baby Crib. She dropped off peacefully in next-to-no time, clocking up a remarkable four-to-five hours on occasion at just five weeks old.

The crib never felt stuffy or overly warm during testing. She also had plenty of space to stretch her arms and legs and have a little kick-around once she was awake.

What are the mesh sides like?

The mesh sides seemed to offer a good amount of airflow, although I would have liked better visibility of my baby while she was asleep. Once she was inside, I could only really see her silhouette through the mesh.

That said, I found the breathable design reassuring and loved the simple, minimalist look of the crib overall.

Does the BabyBjörn Baby Crib rock or move?

No, the crib does not rock or move. It felt very stable and secure-feeling in testing, helped by the birchwood stands on each side.

How robust and well made does the BabyBjörn Baby Crib feel?

Given the higher-than-average price tag, I was reassured but not surprised by how well made the cot felt.

It seems designed to withstand plenty of use, with hardy materials such as steel for the top rail and foot tubes, plus machine-washable fabrics that are easy to whip on and off. BabyBjörn also offers a 10-year guarantee.

How easy is the BabyBjörn Baby Crib to keep clean?

At first, I was wary of just how pristine the white polyester mesh looked, especially with a baby in close proximity, but I was relieved to learn it is machine washable at 40°C. A zipper tool is provided to remove the fabric from the frame.

The manual advises cleaning the mesh with a mild detergent, then air-drying it afterwards, as tumble drying is not recommended. The same can be done with the mattress topper, while the integrated mattress can be cleaned by hand.

How practical is the BabyBjörn Baby Crib around the home?

At 10kg and with no wheels attached, the crib isn't exactly designed for frequent room hopping throughout the day, but was lightweight enough for the occasional room swap when I needed it.

It also has a relatively small footprint at 57cm x 110cm, and looks visually more compact thanks to the airy mesh sides and rounded corners. It can be disassembled for storage, too, although it is best left set up for full-time use.

Are there any design details you particularly liked or disliked?

I loved that the crib could be transformed for older babies without any major reassembly or additional parts. It relies on a simple zip system built into the frame, with the zips determining how high or low the mattress sits.

Because the mattress is integrated, it means there aren’t any gaps or hard edges.

What I was less keen on was the lack of a drop-down side, which made settling during the early weeks more awkward, as I had to lean over the crib to comfort my baby.

What’s in the box?

How sustainable is the BabyBjörn Baby Crib?

The cot has some great wins in terms of sustainability – it has a 10-year guarantee and is repairable via BabyBjörn’s customer services (normal wear and tear isn’t covered). It also arrived in mostly recyclable packaging.

The machine-washable fabrics also boost its longevity, not to mention the timeless 2-in-1 design, which – in theory – promises years of use.

Is the BabyBjörn Baby Crib worth the money?

At £439 the crib feels like an investment, but one that could pay off as your child grows if you use it from the newborn stage through to toddlerhood.

There is no need to buy anything extra, as a crib sheet, mattress and topper are all included in the price. The premium materials also feel reassuringly durable, which helps justify the higher upfront cost.

MadeForMums verdict

The fact my baby slept so well in this crib was enough to convince me this is a quality product – she looked comfortable and happy, which gave me the reassurance (and sleep!) I needed during the foggy newborn phase.

The lack of drop-down side was less convenient for night-time feeds, and for parents looking for a next-to-me-style crib, this won’t fit the bill.

That said, if you want a stylish, long-lasting crib that bridges the gap between a newborn bassinet and a larger cot, the BabyBjörn Baby Crib is a well-made option that should suit parents who are happy to pay more for a premium 2-in-1 design.
