Ingredients

  • 25g Butter
  • 25g Plain flour
  • 500ml Whole milk
  • 100g Cheddar cheese, grated

Method

  • STEP 1

    Heat the butter in a pan until melted.

  • STEP 2

    Stir in the flour to make a smooth paste (roux).

  • STEP 3

    Gradually add the milk, stirring until smooth.

  • STEP 4

    Simmer for 8-10 minutes, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens.

  • STEP 5

    Remove from the heat and stir in the cheese until melted.

  • Omit the cheese and use the white sauce as a base for other dishes such as lasagne.
