  • It can be difficult knowing how to style your blossoming baby bump, but never fear as MFM is here! We've created a fashion formula for your capsule wardrobe with the key pieces that'll see you through your pregnancy.

Check out our list of do's and don'ts below and then click through to have a look at our top 9 maternity wardrobe pieces as well as 5 accessories and extras to finish off your new look!

DON'T make the mistake of buying your normal clothes in larger sizes. This will just make you look big, bulky and frankly rather odd, with your hemline at the front riding up and the back sagging down. Maternity clothes have flourished in the last decade. Invest in stylish pieces that fit well, glide over your contours and bump and give you a flattering shape.

DO have 10 basic items of clothing in your perfect pregnancy wardrobe. The idea is to mix and match them and create a multitude of outfits for any occasion - day or night.

DO choose two different neutral shades for the core of your wardrobe. Fitted trousers, skirts and dresses in black and dark grey are perfect for winter. Then add splashes of bright colour with tunics and camisoles to add sparkle to your outfit.

DON'T spend a fortune - remember you're only pregnant for nine months. Just select your 10 pieces carefully, then add some show-stopping accessories and you're all set to go.

So, what pieces should you have in this capsule wardrobe....

  • The LBD

Wear your little black dress simply by day, then pep it up with statement jewellery for an evening out. Choose a style with a deep V-neck to show off your fantastic new cleavage.

  • The underwear

A well-fitting, supportive bra is essential to give you a tip-top shape. There are so many beautiful and sexy maternity bras around that you're spoilt for choice.

  • The jeans

Jeans are the ultimate wardrobe staple, as you can dress them up or wear them casually. Darker ones go with anything and are wonderfully slimming too. Opt for either a straight leg style or bootcut to balance out your beautiful bump.

  • The dress

Wrap dresses are wonderful as they ingeniously expand with you during your pregnancy. Wrap styles are also great for breastfeeding when your little bundle of joy arrives.

  • The shirt

Invest in a good-quality cotton shirt, as it's a go-with-anything classic. Wonderful with tailored trousers for work or with jeans for relaxing at weekends. Your skin can often feel very sensitive during pregnancy, so it's lovely to wear soft cotton.

  • The skirt

A slimline skirt is one of the key items to taper your silhouette. Avoid busy prints - block colours or simple pinstripes are much more flattering.

  • The trousers

These will be one of your key items, so buy a pair with a comfortable jersey panel or over bump supportive bandeau.

  • The tunic

A bold tunic adds a lovely splash of colour to your capsule wardrobe. Pinks and purples are great shades to go for as they reflect a lovely hue and give your face a rosy glow.

  • The vest

Vests with supportive, built-in bras are perfect for layering. Hormonal changes often mean you feel the heat more when you're pregnant so they're really  useful when peeling off or adding more layers.

  • Now jazz your capsule wardrobe up with some accessories...

    Purple leather bag

Pep up your outfits with colourful bags, but make sure they're not too heavy.

  • Purple feather necklace

Add some jewellery to detract attention from your bump.

  • Ballet pumps

Your feet will swell, so opt for flats in a sassy leopard print.

  • Velvet polka dot scarf

The perfect splash of colour to add to your LBD.

  • Melbourne Maternity Tankini

Flattering, comfortable and supportive - the ultimate in poolside chic.
