Pros

  • Compact but with the option to use from birth to three, easy to assemble, great value for money.

Cons

  • Only one side is removable, so the cot still ends up with three slatted sides even as a toddler bed.

Founded in 2013, nursery products brand Mokee is on a mission to do things differently – like using social media to get customers involved in picking colours and patterns for products, and selling direct from the factory to parents.

At £69.95, the Mokee mini cot isn’t the cheapest baby bed of this size – you can buy an Ikea Sniglar cot for £35 or the Kiddicare Dream cot for £65 – but it has the advantage of a removable side, turning it into a bed for kids up to three, unlike other cots on the market.

What’s in the box?

  • Mokee cot frame
  • Screws
  • Nuts
  • Allen key

Any additional extras?

  • Aloe vera-infused mattress - £34.95 (£15 when purchased with cot)
  • Castor wheels - £5.95
  • Cot top changing mat - £29.95

How quick is it to assemble?

Very! Mokee claims the cot can be assembled in 15 minutes and I was delighted to find this claim was absolutely true.

Despite not being a particularly keen DIY-er, even I was able to negotiate building the cot. It comes flat packed with six parts, as well as a bag full of screws, nuts and an Allen key - you will need your own flat head screwdriver to hold the nuts in place during assembly.

The instruction booklet is quite basic, but that wasn’t a problem as the cot was so easy to assemble. Even my husband was really happy with how light and easy to assemble the Mokee mini cot is, and the speed it can be converted from cot into toddler bed.

How comfortable is it?

Very! My daughter moved straight from her moses basket into the Mokee mini cot at six-weeks-old and the mattress is much more comfortable for her.

The mattress is quite firm and comes with a removable, washable, aloe-vera infused cover, which I thought had quite a strong – but not unpleasant – smell to start with, but that seemed to go after a couple of days.

Can you use it as a co-sleeper?

The Mokee mini cot can’t be used as a co-sleeper, although if you placed the cot right next to your bed, the height of the mattress means it is pretty easy to reach in for your baby for a nighttime feed.

What are the safety features like?

The cot complies with the British safety standard BS EN-716, which means it is deep enough to prevent your baby climbing out, and the distance between the slats is not more than 65mm, so your baby’s head can’t get trapped.

Although there are no specific safety features, I liked the fact that there were very few screws used in assembly and that they were large with a flat end, reducing any possible accidents.

Is the cot portable?

Yes, the beauty of the Mokee cot is that it’s so compact and, because the wooden slats are all pretty slim, it’s relatively light.

One person can carry it so it’s possible to build it in the living room then move it to the bedroom or nursery, rather than having to build it where it is ultimately going to end up.

You can also buy castors (£5.95) to improve the portability even more, and if you take advantages of the incentive on the site which offers new customers £5 off any product, it's almost like you can get them for free!

What is it like on space?

At 124cm in length by 64cm width (84cm height), my husband and I found the cot was the perfect size to fit by our bed.

We plan to keep our baby daughter in our bedroom with us for longer than we did our son, so it’s reassuring to know she will be safe and comfortable, while not taking up all the spare space in our bedroom!

Our second bedroom isn’t huge, so we had been worried about fitting another bed in there with our son’s full size cot bed, but the Mokee mini cot bed won’t take up so much room, giving us a couple more years of breathing space once she moves into there.

Tell us about the adjustable heights?

With three possible base heights at 56cm, 36cm and 20cm, the Mokee is unusual for a cot of this size, as most have just two options.

This is the feature that really sets the cot apart, as it can be used from 0-6 months at the top height, then up to 18 months when it’s lowered to the second level.

The third, and lowest, level allows the cot to be turned into a toddler bed for kids up to three, when the side is removed.

I used it for my six-week-old baby at the top height, and also converted it into a cot bed to try with my three-year-old son: I was happy it really does span the 0-3 age group.

Compared to using a regular cot, or a swinging crib, I really liked the fact that the Mokee has the added bonus of turning into a toddler bed.

And it didn’t feel like a stopgap option, even though it’s got a small price tag, as it is sturdy and has a good quality finish.

What do you think of the design?

The design is minimal which, for the price, I would expect. That does mean that the cot can fit with most other furniture, plus it comes in a range of colours from white and grey, to plum and aqua, as well as limited edition colours.

We had the ivory plum colour – perfect for a girl – but I did notice that the colour is quite different from online, so it might be worth double checking if you plan to try to match it with a particular colour scheme.

MadeForMums verdict?

The Mokee mini cot is a fantastic option for families who want a great value baby bed that can be used from birth to three, without taking up the space of a larger cot bed. I would definitely recommend it to other parents, particularly as the different colours and matching accessories such as a cot top changing mat mean the Mokee is pretty as well as functional.
