Pros

  • Rechargeable, eight hours battery life, cool to the touch, produces a subtle ambient light

Cons

  • Base unit not as stylish as lights, modern design not to everyone's taste

The OXO Candela Tooli Nightlight is an innovative nightlight that stays lit for eight hours and can be used indoors or out. However, the contemporary design may not suit every nursery - you’ll either love or loathe the look.

OXO is a New York based design company, “dedicated to providing innovative consumer products that make everyday living easier”. With a passion for designing clever, funky and functional products, the company is best known for its homewares and kitchen utensils. The Candela Tooli nightlight is OXO’s first foray into the world of children’s products.

The ambient LED lights come in a pack of two (orange/fuchsia or green/blue) with a plug-in charger base and rechargeable batteries. Take the lights off the base and the lights illuminate automatically – no fussing with switches in the dark. The lights are portable and stay cool to the touch.

What we love

The light produced from the OXO Candela Tooli Nightlights is super subtle. Minnie, 13 months, found the orange and fuchsia glow enchanting. Rather than creating a beacon in your baby’s room, the Candela Tooli creates just enough light to guide you to the cot, or to guide a toddler to the loo. And because there are two lights, one can be placed in the room and one in a hallway en route.

With rechargeable batteries and an eight-hour battery life, the OXO Candela Tooli Nightlight scores highly in the eco-stakes and is cost effective – no more scrabbling around for AA batteries. And because this is an LED light, there’s no danger of a bulb braking if your little one knocks it over.

OXO is so ‘on it’ that this product has been featured in Trend Bible 2011, an online showcase of what’s hot in design land.

What to watch out for

To me, in my mid-30s, the Candela Tooli looks like an endearing plasticine character from Morph. And whilst I totally love the modern design, I can’t see it sitting in a Cath Kidston bedecked nursery.

The nightlight base isn’t quite as fab as the lights themselves – it’s cream and looks a bit like a small tray.

Who is the OXO Candela Tooli Nightlight best for?

Eco parents who savour modern design but need a functional nightlight for their tot.

MadeForMums verdict

A subtle pair of nightlights that will add style to any modern nursery. Eco-friendly and well designed, the OXO Candela Tooli Nightlights will reassure any nervous youngster. But at £50 (for the pair), they are not cheap.
