These cheesy pastry straws make a tasty finger food, suitable from 9 months

  • Cheddar cheese 40g, grated
  • Plain flour 85g
  • Butter 40g
  • egg 1, beaten
  • Milk splash


  • Step 1

    Use a little butter to grease a baking sheet and set the oven to preheat at 180C/350F/Gas Mark 4.

  • Step 2

    Sieve the flour into a bowl and add the butter.

  • Step 3

    Rub in the butter until it creates ‘breadcrumbs’.

  • Step 4

    Add the cheese, then half the beaten egg and mix with a knife. Bring the dough together with your hands.

  • Step 5

    Roll out the dough on a floured surface until it is 1/2cm thick. Cut out the ‘straws’ and place on the baking sheet.

  • Step 6

    Glaze with the rest of the egg if you have enough, or some milk.

  • Step 7

    Put in the oven for 10 minutes until golden brown.

  • Older children will enjoy helping to make these – rubbing in the butter, rolling out the dough and brushing the straws with egg or milk.
