American magazine Teen Vogue has raised eyebrows by featuring a pregnant teenager on the cover of its November issue.
British model, Jourdan Dunn, 19, kept her pregnancy a secret from the Teen Vogue team until after the photo shoot. However, even when Jourdan broke the news that she was expecting in December, they opted to keep her on the cover.
“Teen pregnancy is a difficult, real-life issue that Teen Vogue readers (with an average age of 18) are mature enough to be exposed to,” said editor-in-chief, Amy Astley. “Teen Vogue felt it was important to support, not punish, Jourdan, who contributed to a beautiful photo shoot and who will surely have an ongoing and successful career in fashion.”
Jourdan reveals her unplanned pregnancy in an interview inside the magazine. “All I could think about was what my mom was going to say, my agency, my boyfriend,” she said.
“When I told my mom, she started crying and blaming herself. She got pregnant with me at the same age, and she said, ‘I don’t want you to have to go through what I did’.”
While some have criticised the magazine for the decision to keep Jourdan on the cover, others believe it’s a good way to warn young girls about the risks of teenage pregnancy.
