Pros

  • Simple, robust design, great fit, super comfortable, good value

Cons

  • Issues with the removable foam cups when feeding

I have never really had a great affinity with maternity/nursing bras. Any that I tried whilst breastfeeding my two daughters ended up thrown in a corner after frustrations of fumbling with clips, pulling at rubbing straps and despairing of frumpy frills and ill-fitting cups!

So I was keen, yet tentative (given past experiences!) to try the Body Silk Seamless Nursing Bra from Bravado Designs, as I had heard good things, and hoping it would restore my faith in nursing lingerie as I embarked on breastfeeding for a third time with my new baby boy!

Bravado have been creating carefully designed Maternity & Nursing Bras for the past 20 years, striving to create pieces that are essential basics for Mums and Mums-to-be.

The Body Silk is a firm favourite and the Canadian-based company’s bestseller and it’s not surprising to see why!

This simple and functional, no frills, no fuss bra is a great fit, coming in only four sizes (fitting 32B-46F) it is easy to find what is right for you without trying on umpteen bras and also accommodates fluctuating cup sizes without compromising on fit and comfort.

How comfortable did the nursing bra feel?

Super comfortable! With its extra wide back strap I felt extremely supported, which was great as it meant pressure was being taken off my lower back as my breasts became heavier.

The super soft and durable fabric makes for a really enjoyable and snug wear, and coupled with its seamless design means it is barely detectable under clothing.

What about the Body Silk Seamless’s style?

It is available in different colour options ranging from nude to seasonal colours; I tried the Body Silk in ‘Orchid Pink’.

Being someone who usually plays it safe in the bra colour department, I was initially a bit hesitant at such a bright hue…but actually after a while I began to quite like it! The rosy, girly pop of colour was a welcome addition to my fairly subdued lingerie drawer.

Was it easy to fasten and unfasten the clips?

Yes, it was. The clips (which can hold 60lb) were the real test, for me. Having encountered so many fiddly ones in the past I was pleasantly surprised at how easy these were to fasten and unfasten, single handedly too (hooray!). Perfect for feeding on the go!

What about keeping it clean?

The bra washes very well, I machine washed it several times on cool and warm settings as well as the odd hand wash, and it still looks great, keeping its shape with no colour fade or plucking to the fabric.

Will the bra last?

Yes it will, aside from being a durable and well-made item of clothing, the Body Silk can convert into a normal bra for everyday wear, once you have finished breastfeeding - which is the thing I love most about it. Each bra comes with the innovative ‘B Clip’ to convert it from a maternity bra to an every day bra and easy to follow instructions on how to do so, It gives it added longevity and makes it great value for money.

What do you think about the moulded foam cups?

The moulded foam cups are removable and initially, I thought. a great idea for hiding breast pads and too much nipple show and giving the bra a smooth T-shirt bra finish, but I did not get on with them whilst feeding.

I found that every time I unclipped my bra for a feed, the pads would shift and fold over, meaning I spent a lot of time adjusting them afterwards as they made the bra look lumpy and unsightly.

Not ideal when you are out and about, but luckily they are removable! I think they will work better for pre and post nursing wear, although if you did want to use them while breastfeeding you could hold them in place with a few little stitches on the inside of the bra.

How does the bra compare to other maternity lingerie you have used?

Compared with the previous branded maternity/nursing bras I have used, the Body Silk has been by far the best, and I would definitely recommend it as it is such a joy to wear (and I’ve never said that about a bra before!) and helps make breastfeeding that little bit easier.
