Even for someone who doesn’t give a banana puree about what a highchair looks like, this is a gorgeous piece of baby feeding furniture. Billed as “a futuristic egg of a highchair that blasts your kitchen back to the future”, the Hiccup would look fabulous in a bright, modern kitchen. With two colourways – black and orange or white and lime – this won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you like your design iconic and your lines clean it’s a winner.
The Cosatto Hiccup is suitable from around 6 months to 3 years, and has a 5-point safety harness and removable tray. It doesn’t recline or move, but it doesn’t need to – it’s set in the perfect position for feeding. Moving it around is not going to put your back out as it weighs in at just 4.9kg.
What we love
OK, this Cosatto highchair looks amazing. Did we mention that? Everyone who came around for tea went, “Wow! Where did you get that?” Few people could believe that it only cost £60 – it looks more designer and expensive than this.
On a more practical note, the Hiccup is really easy to assemble and doesn’t take up much room once up. We tried it on a willing 6 month old, who loves the novelty of it, and he had no problem with posture, even though it doesn’t budge. We then tried it on an unwilling 2 ½ year old, who claims to be too big for a ‘baby chair’, and even she had no problem fitting in. There was no way she was going for the 5-point harness, though. Their overall verdict? Impressed.
The Hiccup is so light that it passes the ‘can it be moved with one hand while the baby’s under the other arm’ test with flying colours.
When it comes to clean up time, it’s my turn to be impressed. I love the fact that it’s all easy-to-wipe plastic with no material bits and nowhere for food to hide. The tray is easy to remove and just the right size for a good dunk in the washing up bowl.
The Cosatto Hiccup is substantial and doesn’t feel likely to break, but it comes with a four-year guarantee just in case.
What to watch out for
The Hiccup doesn’t have a cushion or any soft bits to make your baby’s mealtime more comfortable. For time-pressed mums, that means it’s easy to clean, but some babies might be expecting a more squishy seat if they’re spending long spells in it.
You can’t adjust the height or recline it, which may be a bind if you want to pull it up to your dining table at teatime. It doesn’t fold up – the closest thing you’ll get to that is to take the legs off for storage.
Although the tray is a fair size, there are larger ones on the market, and is not the ideal choice if you’re doing baby-led weaning and would like to give your little one lots of room to play with their food. But if you’re spoon-feeding it’s fine – it just depends on your taste.
The supersonic design and bright colours are great if you have a modern home, but it would look out of place if your taste is more rustic or floral.
Who is the Cosatto Hiccup highchair best for?
Mums who want a modern, wipe-clean designer look without the hefty price tag.
The Cosatto Hiccup is a sleek, iconic design that’d fun to use and easy to clean. It doesn’t fold or have a cushioned seat, but it’s light and functional. It’s easy to fit a just-sitting baby or a wriggling toddler.
