Pros

  • Cushioned seat and arms remove for easy cleaning, handles to keep little hands off the toilet seat

Cons

  • Position on some toilet models may mean it sits quite far back

Combining a soft perch for little bottoms with an easy-to-clean design has produced the Alpha Egg Toilet Seat from East Coast Nursery.

In lovely lilac, pale blue or cream and beige, the Alpha Egg Toilet Seat is part of the Alpha Egg range that includes potties, top and tail bowls, footstools and baby baths for a beautifully coordinated bathroom. From the nice folks at East Coast Nursery, the moulded designs in cool pastel shades are intended to fit into the modern home, and luckily they do so without losing their practical edge.

What we loved

The Alpha Egg Toilet Seat’s most noticeable feature is the padded cushion seat and handles. The clever thing about these – apart from providing a comfy seat for small bottoms, is that the cushions pop out to allow for easier cleaning. You do get left with three holes where the cushion seat clips in, so cleaning isn’t as easy as with some solid designs, but it’s a nifty idea. I’ve had to do a lot of fiddly cleaning with a cheaper seat with integral cushion and this is definitely a step in the right direction.

The integral handles are a great idea. Not only do the make it easier for little ones to pop the seat on the toilet, but they also provide a hygienic place for little hands to rest, rather than your child putting their hands on the loo seat.

Once in place on the toilet seat, the non-slip ring keeps it firmly in place. A raised backrest adds a little more security, and mums of little boys in particular will appreciate the splashguard at the front!

What to look out for

Arron is 3 and could manage the seat himself, but it is quite weighty compared with cheaper models, so smaller children might struggle a bit.

We found putting it on the loo a bit fiddly, because we had to push it right to the back of the adult seat to get it to sit comfortably, which made it a little tricky to get on to. It definitely will depend on the shape and size of your loo seat.

Some mums have reported that smaller children have found the front splashguard gets in the way when trying to sit on the seat.

Who is the East Coast Nursery Alpha Egg Toilet Seat best for?

Mums of older toddlers after a toilet seat that has a bit of style.

MadeForMums verdict

The East Coast Nursery Alpha Egg Toilet Seat is a well-made, cushioned toilet seat that should last through toilet training for all your children. Easy to clean, with integral handles, it does its job well – and looks pretty good, too. However, the size and shape of your toilet seat will have some say in how easy or fiddly it is for you to use.
