Pros

  • Light, easy to use, great value

Cons

  • Not travel system compatible, no frills

Who needs frills at this price? Kiddicare has produced a great value car seat that doesn’t scrimp on safety or comfort, and it’s called the Mini.

The Kiddicare Mini Car Seat really is mini – it would be ideal for a mum who’s small or not quite up to lifting much as it weighs roughly 2.8kg. It’s a Group 0+ infant car seat, which means it can be used from birth until 13 kg, when your baby’s about 15 months old. Like all Group 0+ car seats, it’s rearward facing.

The Mini is easily installed by using your car’s rear 3-point seatbelt, and comes complete with a head hugger, shoulder/chest pads and a removable sun canopy. Its cover is also washable. The RRP is £44.99, but at the time of reviewing, it was being sold for £29.97. Both price tags are impressive. Wow!

What we love

At this price, the Kiddicare Mini Car Seat is great if you’re on a budget, but also a good option if you already have a bells-and-whistles travel system and are just looking for a spare car seat to keep with a grandparent.

The Mini is nicely padded and the head hugger makes it feel cosy for even the smallest baby. I thought it looked just the job for a newborn, so I tested it on my friend’s 6-pound newborn and even she didn’t look ‘lost’ in it. I also roped in a longer-than-average 5-month-old to have a turn and it fitted him fine, too. He gave it the extra thumbs up by falling asleep within minutes – and didn’t wake up when we moved him out of the car. That’s a good sign.

Small babies and car seats make me panic – all those tiny limbs and straps everywhere – but this one was on the easy side. Fitting it in the car is very straightforward, and the safety harness is quick to open and close, and simple to work out. It doesn’t look like it could be opened by an older, nosier baby either.

The Mini is small enough to manoeuvre into a three-door car and is very light, with a bar across the carry handle to make it even easier to transport.

Looks-wise, the colourway “Tarmac” is a good, neutral option but there’s also “Rose” if you fancy something more pink and girly.

What to watch out for

The Kiddicare Mini isn’t going to stun you with any funky design, and it’s not compatible with any travel system, but at this price, you almost have to ask, “Who cares?”

The only tricky bit I found was when I came to adjust the carry handle. You need to squeeze at both sides and pull, at which point I felt like I needed a spare hand.

Who is the Kiddicare Mini Car Seat best for?

Parents-to-be and new parents on the lookout for an easy, good value first car seat or spare.
