About our parent tester

Brooke is mum to a 6-month-old baby. She tested the Medela Harmony Flex Manual Breast Pump to build a freezer supply, as well as pumping to give her baby bottles of breastmilk.

How easy is it to first set up the Medela Harmony Flex Manual Breast Pump?

For someone who has very limited experience assembling manual breast pumps, I found the Medela surprisingly easy and straightforward to set up. I did have a scan through the instructions which were laid out clearly and easy to read, just to confirm I had assembled it correctly, which I had. This gave me the confidence to believe that I could do it again without the need to recap.

Did you find it easy to assemble and disassemble the breast pump?

Much like setting it up the first time, I found assembly and disassembly incredibly simple. I found the process very straightforward and uncomplicated, which, as a very busy mum-of-three, I really appreciated! The pump doesn't have a lot of parts to assemble and assembly isn't overcomplicated.

How easy is it to operate the handle on the Medela Harmony Flex Manual Breast Pump?

Very. I didn't experience any problems and found pumping as straightforward as assembly was. I also didn't become tired when manually operating the pump, as the handle was so smooth and easy to use.

Can you adjust the suction strength on the Medela Harmony Flex Manual Breast Pump?

Yes. Being able to adjust the suction strength was an unexpected but pleasant surprise. Rather than just having one standard suction strength option, it has two-speed action suction which I found great for stimulating my milk flow and mimicking my baby's feeding pattern, which in turn helped me produce more milk.

How effective is the Medela Harmony Flex Manual Breast Pump?

In terms of milk production, I experienced the best results I've ever had whilst using the Medela Harmony, compared to using other manual pumps.

The two-speed method, as outlined above, helped stimulate better milk flow for me, which aided in producing more milk. I didn't have to pump long to see results: I produced 150ml within 10-15 minutes of pumping.

Was the milk output consistent for you over multiple sessions?

The amount of breastmilk I expressed using the Medela Harmony stayed relatively consistent, depending on the time I pumped each session. Even during shorter pumping sessions I found that I was pumping a surprisingly generous amount.

How comfortable is the Medela Harmony Flex Manual Breast Pump?

I found the Medela Harmony very comfortable to wear. I particularly like that the oval breast shields can be rotated to fit my breast shape and size. Using the pump was so comfortable, I could easily have a cup of tea and pump milk for my baby at the same time. I also often breastfed my baby whilst pumping on the other breast, which I found comfortable to do, too.

I didn't experience any pain either. Afterwards, my nipple would feel slightly sensitive but no different really from when my daughter nurses from me.

Did you use the Medela Harmony Flex for regular pumping? Or was it better as a backup?

I used the Medela Harmony for regular pumping and when needed. I've also found it a great way to build up my stash for the freezer, using some to make breastmilk lollies, catching my let down, and milk engorgement.

How does the Medela Harmony Flex compare to other breast pumps you have used?

I have only ever used a Haakaa manual breast pump in the past, which I found rather uncomfortable and produced very little output – although it is around £5 cheaper. I actually found it quite discouraging using a manual breast pump as my milk output was very low, or non-existent. This crushed my confidence in pumping and honestly stopped my from pumping altogether, because I wasn't seeing any results.

In comparison, the Medela Harmony Flex Manual Breast Pump is very comfortable, pain free and provides a consistent output of milk — I can't believe the difference. It really feels like it's made with mums in mind to help make pumping feel comfortable and stress free.

Is the Medela Harmony Flex Manual Breast Pump discreet?

For a manual pump, I found the Medela Harmony to be discreet and quiet. I could easily use it in public – it's relatively compact and I could even fit it under my shirt. There's also the added bonus of it being very quiet. It really doesn't draw attention to yourself, and it doesn't wake baby if they're asleep next to you while you're pumping. I would feel more than comfortable pumping with this pump in public.

How easy is it to clean the pump?

Really easy. I carefully removed the the valve membrane, the stem with O ring and the diaphragm, which was simple and straightforward, to make sure they were thoroughly cleaned and sterilised. The parts can be hand washed or put in the dishwasher.

Would you buy the Medela Harmony Flex as your main pump, or a back-up one?

Personally, I would purchase this to be my main pump. I like the control I have when I am pumping, I like that it’s portable, and also that it’s quiet, which means I can pump in peace and discreetly if I wish. I also love that by using a manual pump, I don't have to worry about wires, batteries, or having to charge my pump. Of course, some people will prefer the hands-free convenience of an electric pump, but for me a manual works just fine.

Do you think it’s a good everyday pump or better for travel?

I think it depends on the individual. The Medela Harmony Flex pump is definitely a must-have item in your luggage or baby bag, for pumping whilst traveling or on days out, as it’s lightweight, compact and has minimal parts which are easy to clean. Also, it's suitable for everyday use because it’s discreet, effective, and easy to assemble and disassemble, meaning you spend less time cleaning pumping parts (which is such a big one for me personally). I would – and do – use this pump daily, but would also take this on my travels as it's compact and requires no electricity.

Is the Medela Harmony Flex Manual Breast Pump worth the money?

With an RRP of £25, the Medela Harmony pump is extremely reasonable and offers great value, particularly when compared to electric models. It provides an incredibly effective performance and can be used at home or for on-the-go pumping. Due to the nature of it being a manual pump, it's not going to have the bells and whistles and fancy features of a wearable or electric pump, but for just £25, it's definitely worth the money.

Where can I buy the Medela Harmony Flex Manual Breast Pump?

It's available from Amazon, John Lewis and Medela.

MadeForMums verdict

I found the Medela Harmony Flex Manual Breast Pump to be extremely effective and comfortable – and with an RRP of £25, it offers incredible value considering how much it has helped my pumping journey. Using this pump has restored my confidence when pumping and I now feel like I have more control over the strength and length of each pump, compared to the other pump I was using before.

It's simple to assemble, easy to use and its clever features, such as the PersonalFit Flex breast shield and ergonomic swivel handle, make this pump a pleasure to use. I've already been recommending the pump to my friends and would recommend it to anyone looking for a great value and effective manual breast pump.
