If you’re short on space or off on holiday, it’s great when, like most of us busy mums, products are able to multitask. Luckily for me, the Playmat Sheet Waterproof from Perfectly Happy People does just that.

The Playmat Sheet Waterproof takes on two jobs for you. The product is, initially, a playmat with a waterproof backing, so it can be used in the park or garden as a damp-free area for baby to play on - or for mum to sit on while she takes a well-earned break. But more than this, it doubles up as a handy waterproof sheet, which is perfect for taking on holiday.

What we love

The cosy cotton top layer of the Playmat Sheet Waterproof is soft enough for babies to lie, roll and crawl on, while its polyester backing successfully stood up to a good soaking without being noisy. The fact that it doubles up as a playmat for use in the garden, park or beach – and that it looks like one, so you don’t appear to have gone out with your bedding – is a real bonus. It feels pretty sturdy too, so it should stand up to being taken on holiday or for short trips.

Joy of joys! It can also be tumble dried! So it’s quickly ready for another damp night – or that spontaneous trip to the beach. Even better, its top layer has a fun animal print, featuring lions, giraffes, tortoises, cows and more - which even earned the thumbs-up from my nearly-three-year-old, who had great fun spotting all the different creatures.

What to watch out for

Because the Playmat Sheet waterproof is not fitted, unless it can be tucked in, it’s very liable to slip, which it did unfortunately on a night when Arron was not quite as dry as we thought - so I ended up with a wet mattress. In a cot bed, the best solution is to lay it lengthways across the mattress, in the area that is most likely to get wet, so that you can tuck the sheet in well under the mattress.

I also found that, despite washing well, and coming out stain-free, the Playmat Sheet waterproof did not lie as flat as it did initially – and it can’t be ironed (who am I kidding? Ironing is very low on my list of priorities, but I would have tried it if I could in the interests of this review!)

Who is Playmat Sheet waterproof best for?

Anyone off on holiday or visiting friends who needs a versatile product that can be a playmat in the day and a mattress protector at night.

MadeForMums verdict

The Playmat Sheet waterproof from the Baby Catalogue/Perfectly Happy People is a versatile playmat and mattress protector. It’s great for anyone off on holiday who wants to travel light and the fact that this can be used as a playmat in the park or on the beach AND to protect beds from leaks and spills is a bonus. But it’s not first choice if you’re after a bed protector for prolonged use or have a very wriggly tot.
