Pros

  • Portable, washable

Cons

  • Depends on compatible furniture, may not suit larger babies for long

If you’re heading out for a meal with your baby in tow, you can’t rely on your destination restaurant having a highchair. The Tamsit travel highchair could be your solution.

It was great to get out and about with my baby and while he was only drinking milk it was a bit of a doddle, needing nothing more than a breast or bottle and a comfy lap. But once he was weaned, I suddenly found myself booking a table with ‘plus one’. Many family-friendly restaurants come supplied with crayons, puree and highchairs but what about when I head to a place that’s a little more out of the way, a little more adult? Well, the Tamsit travel highchair is ideal.

What we love

Essentially a fabric wrap, the ‘chair’ folds over the back of most solid restaurant chairs and ties at the back. The rest of the nappy-shaped cloth is placed under my baby’s bottom and pulled up to the waist, where ties are brought round the back of the chair and secured, keeping him upright and ready for mush.

Its biggest draw is its portability. Smaller than a muslin square, I can jam it into a handbag or changing kit and forget about it until I need it.

To clean, I just threw it in the washing machine and dry like any other item of clothing.

It meant no more little wriggling body on my lap while trying to feed him and myself. And no more avoiding the more adult gastro pubs because they don’t have a highchair.

What to watch out for

The Tamsit travel highchair doesn’t fit every chair. It can’t cope with round backed, upholstered or moulded chairs.

If your baby is larger you may find it won’t last until the promised 18 months. Also, because your baby is tied in to the adult-sized chair, he may not be able to reach the dining table, restricting his view and making self-feeding difficult.

Who is the Tamsit travel highchair best for?

Mums who dine out at short notice.

MadeForMums verdict

An inexpensive stand-by for those of us who like to get out and about visiting, and make spur of the moment decisions to grab a bite. The dining experience of your baby is still somewhat reliant on the right kind of furniture being in the restaurant.
