In a nutshell

A great idea to get toddlers interested in sitting on a potty, but the deflector shield needs to be stuck down

Pros

  • Removable bowl, looks like a loo, rewards your toddler with stickers, seat can be used as toilet training seat on adult toilet, plays music

Cons

  • Deflector shield comes off easily and is a bit short, child can only sit on it from the front (they have to back onto it), music is a bit of a distraction

Leading your toddler through potty training can be a very stressful time and half the battle, as many mums will know, is often just getting your child to sit on the potty. With the Smart Rewards Potty from Safety 1st your child won't want to get off it.

Retailing at £30, the Smart Rewards Potty is aptly named as it comes with two rolls of stickers that dispense out of the side of the cistern and a reward chart to log your toddler’s progress. The potty is manufactured by Safety 1st, the company behind the Baby on Board car sticker that’s been making baby and toddler equipment including buggies, car seats, stairgates and booster seats for 25 years.

Nathaniel, 27 months, is not quite ready for potty training yet, but seems quite happy, whenever requested, to sit on a potty, so I had high hopes for the Smart Rewards model. It arrived in two pieces and was very easy to assemble, and Nathaniel instantly knew it was similar to mummy's toilet and tried to flush it – a regular occurrence throughout its two-week trial. Any relatives that have visited have been shown the marvellous-looking potty and everyone thinks it looks great. Nathaniel loves it so much we've started calling it his en-suite!

What we love

The Smart Rewards Potty looks just like a loo and Nathaniel loved sitting on it, as he thought it was a smaller version of an adult toilet.

The music and encouraging prompts are great, as Nathaniel found it entertaining and wanted to keep trying.

Giving children rewards is a usual part of potty training and the built-in sticker dispenser makes it an instant hit. Nathaniel was very eager to earn his reward and get a sticker.

With this potty you don't need to buy a separate toilet trainer seat attachment for an adult loo, as the potty seat comes off easily and attaches to an standard-size adult toilet. It's two toilet training items for the price of one.

What to watch out for

I loved the idea of a deflector shield, but it is a bit short and it detaches easily, so I found I kept having to fish it out of the potty when Nathaniel sat down.

Because the Smart Rewards has a “toilet cistern” back to it, Nathaniel had to back up to it rather than just walk up from back to front, and this took some getting use to.

It is a bit of a novelty and I found that Nathaniel spent quite a long time just listening to the music rather than getting down to the business.

Who is the Safety 1st Smart Rewards Potty best for?

Toddlers who want to mimic their parents and those who need an extra bit on encouragement to try out the potty.

The Safety 1st Smart Rewards Potty is an innovative idea with everything your toddler needs to have a calm potty training experience. However, the deflector shield needs to be reworked.
