Tommy’s Multivitamins, Minerals and Folic Acid contain nutrients recommended during pregnancy at safe levels and for a great value price.
Folic acid, one of the most important nutrients for mums-to-be, is included at the levels recommended by the government (400mcg). This has been shown in trials to reduce the incidence of neural tube defects, such as spina bifida, in babies.
The supplements are also particularly high in vitamin D, at 12.mcg. This is higher than the Food Standards Agency’s recommendation of 10mcg during pregnancy. Vitamin D is known to regulate the amounts of calcium and phosphorus in the body, important nutrients for building bones.
Twice the recommended daily amount (RDA) of vitamin B12 is included, due to its importance in processing folic acid. However, there are slightly random amounts of other minerals, such as the 47% of your RDA of zinc, and the calcium content is low at 25% of your RDA.
What we love
A proportion of the price comes back to Tommy’s to help the charity fund further research into pregnancy complications. Tommy’s Multivitamins, Minerals and Folic Acid compares very well on price to other pregnancy multivitamin supplements, and they are suitable from conception through to breastfeeding.
What to watch out for
Tommy’s Multivitamins, Minerals and Folic Acid don’t contain your full complement of all vitamins or minerals, for instance, vitamins E and B6 or calcium. They aren’t suitable for vegetarians as they contain pork gelatine. They may also be unsuitable for a gluten- or yeast-free diet.
They are only available at Boots. You should remember that supplements shouldn’t be used as a substitute for a healthy, varied diet. Also, check with your GP before taking any supplements.
Who are Tommy’s Multivitamins, Minerals and Folic Acid best for?
Charitable mums-to-be.
MadeForMums verdict
A good budget buy that includes all the basics, but other brands offer a stronger nutrient package.
