Why make slime without glue?

Making slime without glue will still result in some great slime, and might even be easier for you to make as well. All you need is water, cornstarch/ cornflour and shampoo — ingredients that you probably already have around your house. If you don't have a well-stocked craft cupboard (and not many of us do), you might not have a whole bottle of glue to hand.

Also, this recipe for making slime without glue is mess-free and non-stick too, so is a super clean and easy way to make slime.

Ingredients you will need

  • 1/2 cup shampoo: thick gel shampoo or 3-in-1 shampoos works best (the thicker the shampoo, the thicker the slime)
  • 2-3 drops food colouring (optional): this is used to colour the slime so your child can pick their favourite colour, or just use whatever you have in the cupboard!
  • 2 1/2 cups cornstarch (also called cornflour in the UK)
  • 3/4 cup cool water
  • A bowl

How to make slime

  1. If using food colouring, add 2-3 drops to 1/2 cup of thick gel shampoo in a large bowl, stir to combine
  2. Add 2 1/2 cups cornflour to the bowl and stir to combine — the mixture should create a thick, crumbly paste
  3. Slowly mix in 3/4 cool water 1 tablespoon at a time — the mixture should go from crumbly to smooth
  4. Keep stirring and adding water until the mixture goes slimy — make sure not too add too much water, add it in 1 tablespoon at a time until it's soft and stretchy but not liquid
  5. When the mixture is fluid enough to handle, use your hands to knead and stretch the slime until smooth

How to store your slime

Store your slime in an airtight container at room temperature, it should keep well for around a week. You'll notice it's time to make a new batch once the slime starts to separate or dry out.

For another fun idea, you could play with the slime in a warm bath — it will dissolve into colourful, sudsy fun!
