When a dangerous house fire broke out on Richard Branson’s Necker Island, Kate Winslet couldn’t have known the blaze would end in marriage.

But the disaster brought Kate and Ned Rocknroll together, and joint survivor experiences turned into romance.

So when it came to naming their first child together, the couple wanted to mark their memorable meeting.

Appearing on Ellen DeGeneres’s chat show, Kate said: “Bear’s second name is Blaze because my husband and I met in a house fire basically.

“The house burned down and we survived, but we wanted something of the fire and so Blaze was the name that we came up with. Bear Blaze.”

The couple started their relationship after the fire in August 2011. They married in December 2012 and Bear was born on 7 December 2013.

Kate already has two children - a 13-year-old daughter Mia by her first husband Jim Threapleton and son Joe, 10, by ex-husband Sam Mendes.

And Kate explained her older children were included in the naming process.

She said: “We were thinking about names during the pregnancy.

“When I was pregnant with Mia and when I was pregnant with Joe I didn’t name them before they came out because I always felt like I just have to see them and see who they’re going to be.

“But of course, this time around there’s Mia and Joe and the whole pregnancy is about what are we going to call the baby. So it was really lovely actually they were very much included and we settled on Bear quite early on.

Kate also explained why Bear was even in the frame for possible baby names.

“A friend of mine when I was younger was nicknamed Bear and I just had always really loved it. And he was very much a bear. He was everyone’s shoulder to cry on he was a big bear hug, he was a great figure in my life and I just had always remembered him and so that’s where it came from.”

Well, if you’ve ever wondered how celebrities come up with such unusual names, now you know!
