Why Kate Middleton could give birth in an NHS hospital
Reports suggest the royal couple are considering a local birth unit for delivery
Expectant parents Kate Middleton and Prince William are reportedly considering breaking with tradition and welcoming their first baby into the world in an NHS hospital, according to The Daily Express.
It has been widely assumed that the royal couple’s first child would be born in the private Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington. The private unit costs £5,000 a night and is where Prince William, Prince Harry, and many other royal babies have been delivered.
Over the last few days however it has been suggested that William and Kate might be looking into alternative hospitals for the birth.
The couple are said to be considering the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading as an option in case Kate goes into labour while staying at her parents’ home in nearby Bucklebury, a source told the national newspaper.
Kate herself was born at the Royal Berkshire Hospital and it has a well-rated maternity unit and the option of single rooms for privacy.

If the reports are true, the couple are wise to consider alternative hospitals as a back-up plan, as Kate will no doubt be spending time at her parents’ house as her due date approaches.
