Mothercare set to release chic new buggy – first look at the Movix!
With up to 50 different colour combos to decide between, the Mothercare Movix certainly lets you personalise the look of your buggy. But this travel system compatible pram-to-pushchair promises to be more than just a pretty face
Mothercare has a brand new travel system compatible buggy set to roll out in Spring 2012. Called the Movix, it will be able to be used as a pram, a forward or rear facing pushchair and - if you purchase a Maxi-Cosi Pebble or Maxi-Cosi CabrioFix car seat - a travel system. The strapline is “comfort, style and versatility – made easy for you” – three claims our seasoned buggy reviewer is currently putting to the test.
As well as the flexibility of set-up, one of the Movix’s big selling points is the idea of creating your own look. With colours ranging from the bold citrus punch to the subtle and urban pebble - and the potential for up to 50 looks - it’s great news for those of us who want to add a dash of personality to our baby gear.
Style-wise, the Movix remind us a little of Mamas & Papas Mylo, with a few of its colour choices and ability to mix-and-match tones; has a touch of the Bugaboo Cameleon about it with its inflatable rear wheels and smaller front wheels; and a hint of the Phil & Teds Smart to it, with its clever moulded airflow seat.
It’s not the first time Mothercare has used a tailor-your-own approach – it uses this set-up with the MyChoice travel system compatible pushchair. While the MyChoice lets you choose three wheels or four, and then just the colour of your pram and pushchair seat unit, the Movix is a three-step affair, and it’s four wheels all the way.
So exactly how do you go about Movix-making? First off, you choose the ‘base pack’. This includes a 4-wheel chassis (buggy frame), carrycot base (which lets you use the Movix from birth), pram liner, mattress and airflow seat (for use from 6 months to about 3 years). The option here is between dark clay or vanilla, though the buggy chassis stays the same shade (black).

Next up, you can pick your ‘necessity pack’. This comes in a choice of five shades and includes the pram/pushchair hood, carrycot apron, seat pad, harness pads and weathershields for both the pram and pushchair set-ups.
Finally, you get to the ‘comfort pack’. The same five shades used for the necessity pack are available again, and this pack is comprised of the cocoon-style cosytoes and changing bag with change mat.
The Movix also boasts three seat recline positions, four handle positions, the ability for the optional car seat to attach straight on to the chassis without adaptors and a hinged bumper bar. As a pram, it weighs 13.2kg and as a buggy, it's 11.9kg. We eager to find out how it folds and how easily the seat direction can be reversed.
This newcomer won’t suit all budgets – the package above will cost £570, and adding a car seat for £130 to £160 means you’re looking to pay £700 to £730 for a full travel system. It does boast a lot of features and accessories for this price tag, but could sit on the “lust-have” rather than “must-have” list for cash-strapped new parents.
