Sainsbury's has issued a recall notice on bottles of Blossom Cottage Morello Cherry Cordial after some bottles were found to explode.

The supplier - Blossom Cottage - and the Food Standards Agency have also put a statement out, so if you do buy this drink, do have a look through the info they've released about the problems with the batch.

(Tho' don't panic - it's only a small number that were sold only through Sainsbury's stores, and with a particular set of batch numbers and best before date).

The recall notice states:

CONSUMER RECALL NOTICE

More like this

On 12.08.2016 a voluntary recall was initiated on Blossom Cottage Morello Cherry Cordial 500ml bottles with a best before end of JUL 17 and a batch code ending 16203 that was sold in Sainsbury’s stores.

The product potentially presents a risk to health because it has fermented, and pressure may have built up in the bottle. A recall from consumers is being carried out as a precautionary measure.

ACTION REQUESTED

If you are in possession of a bottle of this product showing the batch code above, please do not return it to Sainsbury’s, and do not attempt to open the bottle or consume the contents. Instead dispose of the unopened bottle carefully in your refuse bin.

Then contact the Blossom Cottage Customer Care line immediately for refund and other guidance on 02890734775 or email info@blossomcottagedrinks.co.uk.

If you prefer, you can return the product to a Sainsbury’s store for refund. Please wrap the product and place in a plastic bag before you take to the store.

No other Blossom Cottage products are affected.

Blossom Cottage apologises for any inconvenience caused and thanks you for your co-operation during this recall period.

So, what's the deal with the recall?

You'll note that there is a bit of conflicting advice in the statement - it says at first NOT to return it to Sainsbury's but then further down says you can.

Hmmm. The Food Standards Agency advises immediate disposal, as do Sainsbury's in their own recall notice - and given that this could potentially explode and send glass shattering everywhere we would probably stick to that initial advice to bag and bin, wouldn't you?

Better safe than sorry...
