Controversial maternity fashion line launched by US teen clothing brand

Concerns that popular and cheap ‘Forever 21’ aimed at youngsters will encourage teen pregnancy

Forever 21, the US clothes retailer popular for selling fashion-forward clothing at low prices, has courted controversy by expanding into maternity wear. The brand, loved by youngsters and teenagers, has launched Love 21, a range of cheap and stylish maternity clothing including jeans for as little as US $8.

The stores including the new maternity range happen to be in five US states with high rates of teen pregnancy.

Outcry by organisations such as the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy has led the company to issue a statement denying the range is aimed at under-21s.

“Forever 21 did not create, design or distribute Love 21 Maternity to target, or appeal specifically to pregnant teens. Any relationship between teen pregnancy rates and the locations of our stores is unintentional,” the statement claimed.

Is this glamourising pregnancy, or is the brand just catering for the young mums-to-be who already live in these areas? Let us know what you think below.

I think personally it's aimed at a market already there, surely no teenager would see a maternity top and think''must have that, must get pregnant''
There's a market out there,so can't really see the connection with the range causing the problem.

I don't see the problem with it. Why can't teenage mums-to-be still be fashionable?Like mummabear said teenage girls are not going to get pregnant just to try out the maternity range. I don't see it as glamourising pregnancy any more than a trendy looking changing bag.

People seem to forget that the age of consent is 16 (still a teenager) so teenage pregnancies are inevitable and remember you're officially a teenager until you're 20 so not all pregnant teenagers are aged 13, 14 and 15.

Not all teenagers want to get pregnant just to get a council house and claim benefits. Some genuinely do want to be a mum and love their babies dearly like others want to go to college and university. What's wrong with that?
