  • A quick guide to find the best car seat - what to look out for...

Our pick of the best baby car seats below are taken from our rigorous MFM reviews. They include two types:

    • Group 0+ - suitable from birth to 13kg (around 15 months)
    • Group 0+/1 - suitable from birth to 4yrs

We've got 12 of the best-performing car seats for babies over the next few pages.

But first, 4 things you need to know...

1 Car seat law - you need to use a car seat to transport your baby around in a car. Read the latest law update and the exceptions

2 Safety - should be your priority when choosing a car seat, not looks or budget bargains. While price is important, and not actually an indicator of how safe it is, don’t settle for second best – or secondhand.

While car seats are vital safety tools for keeping your child secure when travelling in a vehicle, please remember it's made to be used in a car, not as a device where your child can sleep at home or on a shopping trip.  You shouldn't keep him (or her) in the car seat for longer than 2 hours, with the exception being a lie-flat car seat.  But if you're in any doubt contact your car seat manufacturer.

3 How it fits in your car - not all car seats fit in all cars. Also, check how easily the seat can be correctly installed in your car. Incorrectly fitted seats can be dangerous. Either make sure you get it professionally fitted, or check that it’s easy to install right if you need to swap the seat from your car to your buggy chassis (as part of a travel system) and back again. Some manufacturers offer a quick online checking service, such as Britax’s Fit-Finder or Maxi-Cosi’s car fitting list. Have your car’s make, model and year of production close to hand for fast checking.

4 ISOFIX - This is a type of fitting, which makes it easy to install your car seat correctly into your car. However, not all cars have ISOFIX - so check your car is compatible before buying. And remember, some ISOFIX car seats can also be fitted into a non-ISOFIX car with a seat belt.

It's complicated so why not read our car seat buying guide for step-by-step advice.

Now look at our 14 of the best...

Given that Maxi-Cosi is one of the top brands of infant car seats, it’s not surprising that there are three Maxi-Cosi models in our Top 14. The Pebble Plus is the updated version of the older Pebble and a step on from the very popular Cabriofix.

The new seat is now iSize compatible and can be used up to 4 years in the rearward-facing position when teamed with a 2wayFix and 2wayPearl base.

  • Maxi-Cosi Opal, £220

    Age: birth to approx 4yrs

The Maxi-Cosi Opal car seat spans Group 0+ and 1, meaning it can be used from birth to 18kg (roughly 4 years) and change from a rear facing to a forward facing position. Despite this longer life span, it’s still a relatively compact size.
