These re-usable nappies are easy to use and very effective, although they are quite big and bulky for smaller babies

Bambino Mio is a home-grown UK company based in Northamptonshire. The brand boasts a large range of beautifully printed products including its award-winning all-in-one nappies (the Miosolos), swim nappies and muslins.

As more and more people want to reduce their plastic usage and limit the number of nappies ending up in landfill, reusable options are in the spotlight and the Miosolos are part of a growing market. They are competitively priced and the multiset kit (£74.99 on Amazon, including six nappies, a roll of paper liners and a sample of nappy sanitiser) is a good buy for those looking to purchase a starter pack.

Tested by

Dom and his wife have been testing the Miosolos on their 8-week-old daughter, both during the daytime and overnights. The family is looking to reduce their plastic use as much as possible – so were particularly excited to test these reusable nappies.

What were your first impressions of the Miosolos?

My first impressions of the Miosolos were very good. I liked the fact they are extremely soft to the touch, easy to use on our daughter and beautifully designed. One critique is that they look enormous – it’s like she’s wearing Frank Bruno’s boxer shorts! This is particularly noticeable when compared with the eco disposable nappies Bouncing Babies and Kit and Kin (£39 on Amazon) and newborn-sized reusables gNappies (£14.95 on Amazon) we had been using in the first few weeks of her life.

What age is the Bambino Mio Miosolo nappy set designed for?

Bambino Mio claims the Miosolos can be used from birth right up to potty training, which is very appealing for us as we would like to avoid purchasing new reusables as our daughter grows.

The minimum weight for the nappies is 4kg according to their website. Our daughter was born weighing 3.5kg and, at six weeks, she was still under 4kg. In wasn’t until she was eight weeks old, when she was a smidge more than 4kg, that we felt ready to test the Miosolos.

Although the nappies are effective at this lower weight, aesthetically, they look very big and bulky on our petite daughter. The bulkiness means that we sometimes need to reconsider her outfits and have often had to use larger clothes in order to fit around the nappy.

For this reason, I would say that they would be best for a baby that is a few weeks old – or perhaps even a few months old.

How easy are the nappies to use?

We have been using the Miosolos for our day and overnight nappy needs and they are very simple to get to grips with. We just adjust the poppers to fit the length of our daughter (we are still using the smallest option) and then adjust the velcro to fit around her waist.

We also use the optional liners, which are convenient and easy to use. With these you simply tear a piece of the liner from the roll and place it into the nappy before putting the nappy on your baby. We have found the liner to add a degree of protection for those dirtier nappy moments, but they’re certainly not a miracle cure…

How easy is it to adjust the nappy as your baby grows?

The Miosolo’s popper and velcro system make it a cinch to adjust the nappy to the size of your baby. There are multiple poppers, which help us to size the nappy to the length of our daughter, and the velcro makes it absolutely flexible to fit the nappy around our daughter's waist.

It is very well designed and a huge plus-point for these nappies.

How comfortable do the Miosolos seem to be for your baby?

Our daughter seems very happy in the Miosolos. When we change her, there’s no signs of dampness on her bum, which suggests that the absorbent pad of the Miosolos is working well. We can also happily report that she has had no nappy rash while we’ve been using the nappies.

From a fit perspective, no marks have been left on our daughter’s legs or waist, which we did find with gNappies in the first few weeks of our daughter's life.

How effective do they seem?

During our testing, we’ve had no issues with the nappies in terms of effectiveness – with the exception of a couple of leaks when we used the nappies overnight. Our daughter sleeps quite well and during a couple of her longer stretches, there were leakages. This was somewhat expected as this sometimes happens with her other nappies too – both reusable and biodegradable disposable nappies – when she sleeps for a decent amount of time.

Other than this, our daughter seemed very comfortable in the nappies and there were no signs of dampness or nappy rash during our weeks of testing.

How does the Bambino Mio Miosolo nappy set compare to disposable nappies?

We used Bouncing Babies and Kit and Kin biodegradable nappies with our daughter for the first few weeks of her life given her very small size and the Miosolos were as simple to use and absorbent as these.

My only criticism is that the Miosolos look bigger on our daughter compared with the sleeker and slimmer fit of the eco nappies.

How do they compare to any other washable nappies you’ve tried?

We have been trying another brand of newborn-sized washable nappies on our daughter. The other brand is an ‘all-in-twos’, which, in my opinion, is slightly easier to use from a washing perspective. That’s because, once soiled, the all-in-twos offer the option to remove just the soiled pad and reuse the outer shell. This makes it less necessary to change and wash the entire nappy.

That said, the Miosolos offer exceptional absorbency when compared with the other brand. We experience far fewer leaks with the Miosolos and so, on balance, prefer these. In addition, as the Miosolos are adjustable in size, we won’t have to worry about buying bigger sizes as our baby grows, as we would with the other brand.

How many nappies do you get with the Miosolo Nappy Set?

The kit came with 6 nappies, which, for our young daughter, only lasted one day before we needed to do a wash. Ideally, we would be doing washing every three days (given our small flat and the fact we don’t have a lot of space for drying) so, in reality, we would need to buy 12 to 15 more Miosolos, which does seem to be quite a significant investment for us.

bambino10

What do you think could be improved with the nappy set?

It would be great if it came with a bigger sample of the washing sanitiser. We found this to be brilliant and really helped with keeping the nappies fresh – but there just wasn’t enough for multiple washes. We will definitely be buying more once we’ve gone through the sample, but it would have been nice to receive more in the first instance.

How easy are the nappies to clean?

The Miosolos are very simple to clean, which is a real bonus. You simply pull out the absorbent pad, which is made easy by the ‘pull out’ washing system, and throw it in the washing machine. The nappies are relatively quick to dry: the outer waterproof shell is very quick but the absorbent pad much less so.

On an average sunny day, the shell dried in less than an hour while the pads took a number of hours. When they had to dry in the flat on a rainy day, the whole drying process took much, much longer, which is a frustration – but totally expected and accepted.

How portable is this kit?

One thing that’s missing from the kit is a travel system for the nappies. We had to purchase a separate wet/dry bag to store clean and dirty nappies when we were out and about.

What feature do you like most about the Miosolos?

The main thing we love about the Miosolos is that they grow with your baby. The adjustable poppers and flexible velcro make the nappies extremely good value for money as we won’t have to purchase new nappies when she gets bigger. As they look durable and very good quality, we’re confident that the nappies will be with us for months and years to come.

bambinp-13

Is the Bambino Mio Miosolo nappy set good value for money?

The Miosolo kit includes six nappies. In my opinion, this is very good value and would make a great kit for any parent who is looking to reduce their family’s plastic footprint.

What’s in the box?

  • 6 nappies
  • A roll of liners
  • A sample wash sanitiser

Are there any accessories needed or available?

A wet/dry bag is useful for our family so we can use the nappies when out and about and for short stays.

bambino-7

What do you wish you had known before you got the Miosolos?

One thing we wish we had known before we got the kit was the average number of nappies that we would need for our daughter. I know this varies considerably day by day and with every child, but a benchmark would have been helpful, as it would have ensured we had enough Miosolos for a couple of days. We don’t want to wash nappies every day so we will probably purchase a number of new ones.

Where can I buy the Bambino Mio Miosolo nappy set review?

It's available from Amazon and JoJo Maman Bebe

Would you recommend this nappy kit?

I would very much recommend the Miosolo Nappy Kit for any parent who is looking to try washable nappies and reduce their environmental footprint. They are easy to use, simple to wash, absorbent and adjustable in order to accommodate a growing baby. The only downside, in my view, is that because of the latter feature, the nappies are quite bulky and big on smaller babies. That said, they are beautifully designed. I definitely think the kit is good value for money when viewed as a long-term investment, as it should see us through months and years.

MadeForMums Verdict

As a family, we’re really keen to cut down on our plastic use. As disposable nappies have a hugely negative impact on the environment, our preference is to use washable nappies on our daughter. That said, we don’t want to compromise on quality and effectiveness, as leaks are not much fun to deal with! We were really pleased with the performance of the Miosolos.

They are easy to use, simple to wash (although not especially quick to dry) and adjustable in size, meaning we will be able to use them on our daughter as she grows. Although they have an extremely bulky look on our small baby, we are thrilled with their performance and their lovely designs.

We would recommend the Miosolos to any family looking for good-quality reusable nappies.
