Pros

  • Long lasting, good support during pregnancy and feeding, very comfortable

Cons

  • Very large, quite expensive

The trouble with a lot of baby products is that no matter how useful they are, they are only useful for a few months at best. The Theraline Original Maternity and Nursing Pillow (or Big V) is different, as it’s invaluable right through from pregnancy to breastfeeding and into toddlerhood.

The Big V pillow was developed in the mid-80s by a Danish nurse to help women sleep in the later stages of pregnancy. It’s filled with tiny microbeads, which provide a soft, comfortable support to your growing bump. It’s been on sale in the UK since 1999 and has been a firm favourite amongst us mums ever since.

What we love

I bought my Big V pillow six years ago when I was pregnant with my son Jacob and it’s been one of the best baby investments I ever made. Shaped like a big ‘V’ (hence the name), it’s perfectly designed to curl around at night, keeping your bump well supported while you sleep.

For breastfeeding I wrapped it around my middle and laid my babies along the pillow to help position and support them while they fed. When I moved onto bottlefeeding I put it behind me to help support my back and arm as I fed.

After my caesarean with the twins, I found the pillow was a great support to help me sit up in bed to feed and cuddle the babies. Using it made it much easier to get in and out of bed even with a painful scar to cope with.

Now I use my pillow to prop up my twins, Zach and Jonah, while they play as at 5 months of age they can’t sit up yet. And in the past my older boys, Jacob and Max, loved to relax on it with me while we read a story.

I also appreciated how easy the pillow is to keep hygienic and clean, because after those inevitable feeding accidents you can wash and tumble dry both the pillow and case.

What to watch out for

The Big V pillow is huge, so if storage (or bed) space is tight you might be better off opting for a smaller cushion. It’s also pretty expensive and if you’re on a tight budget a standard pillow is a good alternative.

Also because the Big V pillow is soft with loose covers, you should never leave a baby unattended on one, as there’s a risk that he or she could slip off or under the pillow.

Who is the Theraline Original Maternity & Nursing Pillow (Big V) best for?

Anyone from insomniac mums-to-be to parents who want a comfortable pillow to feed and relax with.
