Baby dhal with pitta

Indian lentil dhal recipe, great comfort food suitable for babies from 10 months

  • 125ml red lentils
  • 1 splash olive oil
  • 1 whole onion, small
  • 500ml water
  • 1 whole sweet potato, small
  • 0.5 tsp coriander
  • 0.5 tsp turmeric
  • 0.5 tsp cinnamon
  • 20 strips pitta bread


  • Step 1

    Heat the oil in a medium saucepan and sauté the onion for a few minutes until well softened. Add the remaining spices and cook for 5 more minutes.

  • Step 2

    Add 500ml water and stir, then add the sweet potato and lentils.

  • Step 3

    Bring to the boil, then lower the heat and simmer for 20-30 mins, until the lentils are cooked.

  • Step 4

    Mash to the right constituency for your baby and serve with pitta bread strips.
