38-stone mum gives birth in Romania

Morbidly obese Victoria Lacatus welcomes baby girl after being carried into the maternity ward

A woman weighing 38-stone has given birth to a healthy baby girl through caesarean section in Romania. The 25-year-old mum-of-one, who is the heaviest woman to have given birth in the country, had to be carried into the maternity ward at the Bucharest University Hospital by a team of 10 men.

The heavyweight mum, whose daughter weighed in at a healthy 6.4lbs, later defended her reasons for having a baby despite her 38-stone bulge. ‘The baby is the fruit of the love between me and my future husband who is slimmer and weighs just 11 stone. I wanted this child with all my heart, whatever the sacrifice.”

It is believed that Victoria was taken to the Bucharest University Hospital because local wards did not have beds to accommodate her weight. She is, however, in good company as the hospital has delivered babies to 10 other obese women.

“It was a real challenge because she needed four times the anaesthetic a normal person needs,” said a surgeon who helped with the delivery.
