42% of toddlers are fussy eaters

New study shows that cauliflower and cabbage are the most unpopular foods for under 4s

Two fifths of children aged under 4 are described by their parents as fussy eaters, while a further 27% said their children were occasionally fussy. Only one third of parents said their children will eat any food they’re given.

The study of over 1000 parents of children under 4, carried out by MyVoucherCodes, also revealed the top 10 foods that fussy children turn their nose up at:

  1. Cauliflower
  2. Cabbage
  3. Sprouts
  4. Minced beef
  5. Onions
  6. Rice
  7. Cheese
  8. Carrots
  9. Eggs
  10. Peas

There are lots of ways to combat fussy eating but it seems that as parents we’re sometimes our own worst enemy.

The survey found that once parents have decided their children are fussy, a don’t bother spending time trying to encourage their children to eat disliked foods. Nearly 50% of these parents said it was because of the tantrums their children would throw, for example if a piece of dreaded cauliflower or a brussel sprout landed on their plate!

More than a quarter admitted they rarely encouraged their child to try food more than once, as ‘it was easier’ to give children the food they liked.

If your child is a fussy feeder, don’t despair. We’ve got plenty of ideas, approaches and even tricks to change their minds…
