Dads don’t have to be named

Plans to make unmarried mums name the daddy have been abandoned

The government has backed away from plans to force unmarried mums to name the father of their baby on the birth certificate.

Instead, the new rules allow mums to refuse to name the dad, freeing him from having to pay child maintenance.

An idea to make men take a paternity test if there was a dispute over who the father was  has also been shelved, with ministers opting for the test to only go ahead if both the mum and potential dad agree to take it.

The turnaround comes five months on from the government first announcing its’ intent to make mums name the father on birth certificates.
