Paternity leave will increase from two weeks to six months under new laws to be introduced in April 2011.

The move will allow mums and dads to share out parental leave between each other. For example, if a mum decides to go back to work after six months, she can transfer the rest of her leave to her partner.

Dads are currently entitled to take a fortnight’s paid paternity leave. Under the new rules they will be able to take three months paid leave and three months unpaid leave.

Around 400,000 men a year will benefit from the new laws.
