To celebrate the latest release in the much-loved Mr Men series – Mr Men Sports Day, set in Nonsenseland – 500 mums were asked whom they’d most like as their partner in a fantasy 3-legged race.
With the UK’s summer of sport well underway, names such as David Beckham, Wayne Rooney or Usain Bolt might immediately spring to mind but, proving that humour can sometimes pip sporting proweress, comedian David Walliams came top of the poll, with sporty Kate Middleton next, followed by Jessie J, Cheryl Cole and Tulisa.
Usain Bolt only won 7% of the votes.
And asked who they’d least like to race with, mums voted Prime Minister David Cameron bottom, followed by Jeremy Clarkson and Simon Cowell.
Quizzed on who they thought would be first over the line in the mum’s race, Fatima Whitbread came first, followed by Mylene Klass and, perhaps somewhat embarrassingly for the PM, Samanth Cameron came in third.
The poll also showed that, even though sports day (and particularly the mums’ race!) can often become fiercely competititve, only 6% of mums had encouraged their children to cheat to win a race.
David Riley, Managing Director for Egmont Publishing Group, publishers of the Mr. Men Sports Day books said, “Who’d have guessed that the nation’s fantasy school sports day would mirror the wonderful silliness of our new Mr. Men books?! I for one would love to see the egg and spoon race made an official sport!”
Adam Hargreaves, writer and illustrator of the books said, “Sports days bring up such happy memories. I hope girls and boys will enjoy the story."
