Dawn French launches Olympics films starring athletes’ mums

Mums tell what it's REALLY like to raise an Olympian in a series of heartwarming films

MFM popped along to the posh May Fair Hotel in London last night for the launch of a series of short, documentary-style films featuring eight Olympic athletes’ mums. The films see the mums revealing what it’s really like raising a sports star.

We “heart” comedienne Dawn French in a BIG way at MFM, so were thrilled she launched the films, made by Olympic sponsor P&G as part of its ‘Thank you mum’ campaign.

Dawn had us all giggling with tales of weaning tips from Jennifer Saunders and a few jokes about her new slimline figure.

As a proud mum herself, Dawn acknowledged the universal idea that mums would do anything for their kids – and these mums have gone above and beyond.

“Having met the mums, I know that in our very British way they’re all far too modest to acknowledge the importance of the role they play. So that’s what these films are for – to recognise and celebrate their commitment to their children,” Dawn told us.

We watched the hilarious introductory film featuring Dawn, and then watched the heartwarming film featuring cycling champ Sir Chris Hoy’s mum, Carol.

Carol let slip a few things that the four-time Olympic champion would probably rather she kept private – including the relevation that his first ever bike was a girls’ one!

“I don’t think he realised it was a girls’ bike at the time. He managed to break that very quickly, which perhaps meant he’d like a new one,” Carol says in the film.

We loved the bit where Carol said his Olympic titles are “very, very proud moments”, before adding, “Then I was proud of him when he won the egg-and-spoon race when he was a wee boy as well. So I’m just a boring mum who loves her kids.”

Awww, we totally get it Carol.

You can view Dawn’s intro film, plus a film featuring all the mums talking about the highs and lows of raising an Olympian.

The individual films, including those from cyclist Victoria Pendleton’s mum Pauline and marathon runner Paula Radcliffe’s mum Pat, will be added over the coming weeks.

Go Team GB – and their proud mums!
