The heart-wrenching reason this woman’s son asked for 2 packed lunches every day

Josette Duran was worried at first that her meals weren't filling her boy up

Well here’s a story to warm the cockles and restore all faith in humanity!

Josette Duran, who is from Albuquerque, New Mexico, had no idea why her 14-year-old son was asking her for 2 packed lunches every day – probably just assuming her growing lad was having those insatiable teen munchies, right?

But the real reason was actually something completely different – and testament to her youngster’s generosity and kindness.

You see, Dylan was asking his mum for a 2nd lunch so he could give it to a classmate whose own family were too poor to give him money to eat at school.

Josette’s post

Josette only found out the truth when she asked her son if he was left hungry from the meals she was packing him, and if that was the reason he needed 2 each day.

Taking to Facebook to record a video about her son’s amazing actions, Josette said she asked him: “Are you not getting full, boo?” to which he replied that for the past 2 months he had actually been giving the other meal to his friend who only had ‘fruit cup’ each day.

Josette made some enquiries and found out the other boy’s mum was a single parent who had recently lost her job – a situation Josette had first-hand experience of.

“This hits home to me because a few years ago, me and my son were homeless,” she said. “I was living in my car and I was washing him in bathrooms. And we didn’t have food.”

Josette decided to carry on making the 2nd lunch, but then one day, got a call from the school asking her to go in for a chat.

The other boy’s mum had found out what she was doing, and as she had since found a job, wanted to pay Josette back.

Josette refused the cash but instead, via a fundriser from her all-women volleyball team, made a donation of £326 ($400) to the school’s canteen to pay up any outstanding dinner money owed by other kids.

“I’m not doing this for praise or anything, it’s pretty – it’s pretty intense,” Josette explained in her video message. “Dylan is too kindhearted. He’s my hero.”

Dylan’s double lunch

Josette added that now, since Dylan’s initial kindness made her aware that some children were going hungry, along with her volleyball team’s donation, ‘nobody in that school owes any money, and now everyone can eat’.

GULP! What a total tear-jerker of a  story – and what a fab team Josette and Dylan are – although of course he’s only so wonderfully giving and good-hearted because of how his lovely mum has raised him, right?
