Having not delivered a baby for 50 years, 90-year-old Maggie Jones helped her granddaughter Kathy Shah give birth to her great granddaughter.
Kathy, 32, and husband Keval, from Wiltshire, had planned a home birth, but Kathy went into labour so quickly there wasn’t time to call her midwife. Kathy told her husband to phone her grandmother, who lives next door.
Maggie – a midwife during the Second World War – rushed over, and helped Kathy deliver her baby on the living room floor. It all took just 40 minutes.
“I thought to myself, Maggie, it’s time to wash your hands and don your overalls,” Maggie has said, “I just jumped right in to help in whatever way I could.”
Kathy said, “I don’t know what we would have done without her.”
Maggie’s great granddaughter, Carys, weighed in at 7lb 7oz, and joins Kathy and Keval’s first child, Dylan, 19 months.
