Childcare help extended to younger children for UK’s poorest families

The Government has set aside billions of pounds to help educate children from poorer backgrounds, the deputy PM announced today. An extra 15 hours a week of means-tested free daycare will be available to 2-year-olds from lower-income families. This is in addition to an extension of the universal free care for 3 and 4 year olds to 15 hours a week which began last month.

Money has been put aside to pay schools extra for poorer pupils, starting with those eligible for free school meals. Particularly bright children from disadvantaged backgrounds will also be invested in with some of the money going to help them to continue education and go to university when previously this may not have seemed like than option.

Dubbed the “fairness premium”, the coalition hope these plans will help support disadvantaged children from the poorest 20% of families. Nick Clegg also said that the measures were “fair” and would improve social mobility.
