Hot dogs branded a choking hazard

Calls for the fast food favourite to be redesigned over health and safety fears


Doctors in the American Academy of Paediatrics have called for changes in the way the classic hot dog is designed and labelled to minimise the risk of children choking.


It’s estimated that food-related choking kills up to 77 children in the US every year, and experts reckon 17% of these are from eating hot dogs.

The American Academy is calling for hot dogs to be changed to stop them getting lodged in children’s throats.

“Food manufacturers should design new foods, and redesign existing foods, including meat products to avoid shapes, sizes, textures and other characteristics that increase choking risk to children,” said the Academy.

Lead report author, Gary Smith added, “If you were to take the best engineers in the world and try to design the perfect plug for a child’s airway, it would be a hot dog. To try and get them out once they’re wedged in, it’s almost impossible.”
