Jack has once again been crowned the top name choice for boys in 2008, according to baby names statistics from the Office of National Statistics (ONS).

Monikers for little girls varied more across England with last year’s favourite, Ruby, being knocked off the top spot by Olivia.

Parents in Scotland preferred the name Sophie, whereas Katie topped the charts in Northern Ireland. And in Wales, it was Ruby in the top spot, which is also the name chosen for the daughter of Welsh singer Charlotte Church.

Newcomers making their way into the favourite name charts included Riley for boys and for the girls it’s Lexi, which is the name of the daughter of Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden. The name Evie was the only new entry in the top 10, and it replaced Ella.

With wacky and sometimes ridiculous names often chosen by celebrities, it’s nice that traditional boys names reached the top 10, and classic, nostalgic names scored high for girls. Are your children’s names in the top 10? Let us know below…
