William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, have jetted off for a short break in the Maldives, leaving 7-month-old Prince George with his grandparents Carole and Michael Middleton – and creating a bit of critical storm.

Tabloid columnists, TV presenters and Twitter users have all reacted negatively, in what the Daily Mail calls a 'public backlash' to the couple's decision to leave their baby for 7 days.

The Daily Mail's own Amanda Platell led the criticism of Kate, exclaiming, "How can any new mother swan off for some ‘me time’ on a five-star sunlounger, leaving her baby behind?"

And Mirror columnist and Loose Women presenter Carol McGiffin weighed in, too. “I am a tad disappointed in Wills and Kate ," she said, "for going away without baby George, and leaving him at home with a new nanny and Grandma and Grandad Middleton.

“Of course, he’ll be safe and he may not even notice his parents have gone. But what I don’t understand is why they’d want to leave him for so long so soon.

“I don’t have kids but I know that, if I did, I would not be going on holiday without them, especially when they are barely 8 months old.

But The Apprentice’s Karren Brady, herself a mum-of-2, said: “The truth is, travelling with a baby, especially when aeroplanes are involved, is rarely a pleasant experience.

“Kate, we are told, wants to spend quality time with her husband, and I admire this because marriage, like children, is a lifetime commitment and you have to work at being good at it.”

What do you think? Do you think it's wrong for Kate and Wills to holiday without their baby? Or do you think the media are making a lot of fuss about nothing? Would you/did you go away without your child when he/she was very young?
