But a new poll has revealed that ripped trouser legs, lost PE kit and scuffed shoes will take their toll, forcing parents to spend an extra £287 a year per child on lost and damaged items.

The poll conducted by eBay.co.uk found that 38% of parents in the UK buy replacement school wear and equipment every month.

The findings show that children in London are the most likely to lose or damage their school uniform, closely followed by those in Yorkshire.

Unfortunately shoes are most commonly lost – one of the priciest purchases!

According to the research, this is the order of the most valued back-to-school items according to British parents:

  1. Shoes
  2. Jumper
  3. Trousers/skirt
  4. Shirt
  5. Coat
  6. Tie
  7. Backpack
  8. Stationary
  9. Technology gadgets
  10. Trainers/sports kit

So be ready with the trusty name labels, patches and stain remover!
