We’re upgrading the MadeForMums Chat forum on Thursday February 28th and moving it to a different web platform.
The upgrade doesn’t involve huge changes but a few things may look a bit different or work a bit differently, so we’ve put together this Q&A to help you out.
If you can’t find what you’re looking for here, please drop us a mail at firstname.lastname@example.org or, once we’re up and running, please start a thread, tagging @DanielleMFM or @HelenMFM and we’ll reply to you ASAP!
Q What’s going to change?
A Not that much! Chat should look a bit cleaner but still pretty much the same and you’ll be able to find all your threads, past and present. There are be some improvements: you’ll be able to edit posts, tag other users and bookmark threads, and the personal-message system will be more intuitive, for example. And there are a few things that are different (we will, at least for a few weeks, have a limit on picture sizes, for example) but we think, overall, it’s be a better experience for everyone – especially if you use Chat on a mobile phone.
Q Why is this happening?
A We want to improve MadeForMums Chat and make it easier to post – and we can’t make these changes we want on our current platform. This new platform offers many of the features our regular users ask us (like better notifications) – and ticks a lot of techie boxes for us, too.
Q When I go to the new Chat, do I just log in as normal?
A Yes. Click the hamburger (3 lines) icon at the top left of your screen and select ‘Sign in’. You’ll then be asked for your email address and password. We’re afraid you’ll no longer be able to sign in with just your Screen name (or User name) and password.
Q I’m always logged in to MadeForMums. Will I be logged in when I go to the new Chat?
A Not to begin with. You’ll need to sign in with your email address and password (see above) the first time you visit the new Chat forum.
Q What if I can’t remember my password?
A Don’t worry! Start to sign in as normal (see above) and then select ‘Forgotten my password’ (in pink) underneath the password field. You’ll then receive an email that allows you to reset your password.
Q What if I can’t remember the email I used when I first registered?
A Unfortunately, you do need to sign in with the email address you registered with. But if you mail us at email@example.com, we’ll do all we can to help.
Q Will I have the same user name/screen name?
A Yes, almost definitely. We do have a handful of users, though, who have the same user name/screen name as each other but with different capital letters – so MrsMushroom and Mrsmushroom, for (made-up) example. If you happen to be one of those people, you may find your user name/screen name now has a number added to it – so MrsMushroom may become MrsMushroom1, for example.
You can choose either to carry on with this addition to your user name or you can change your user name to something new. If you’re hugely attached to your user name and don’t like the added numbers on the end, you can always talk to us and we’ll do our best to sort you out.
Q What will happen to all the threads I post on?
A They’ll all still be there just as they were before.
Q What will happen to all my posts?
A They’ll all still be there just as they were before.
Q What about my pictures?
A They’ll all still be there just as they were before. But for the next few weeks, there will be a limit on the size of new pictures you can post up: you won’t be able to post a pic of more than 500KB.
We’ll be putting up a thread with a step-by-step guide to resizing pics quickly, which you can use if you find you’re having trouble posting pics. We hope to be able to remove this pic-size limit soon.
Q What about my followed threads?
A We’re afraid you’ll need to re-select these threads – and, on our new platform, these threads are called ‘bookmarked threads’ rather than followed threads.
To bookmark (follow) a thread, just go to the thread you want to bookmark (follow) and click on the green star next to the right of the thread title. It will go a solid green to show you you’ve bookmarked it, and you will receive notifications when other people post on it.
To unbookmark (unfollow) a thread, just click on the green star again and it will revert to a green outline.
Q What about all my personal messages (PMs)?
A The PM system on the new Chat platform is much better and easier to use – but we’re afraid we can’t transfer your old private messages over. We’re really sorry about this, but our techies just couldn’t make it work. If there are any private messages you would like to keep, we suggest copy and pasting them now, before we move over.
If you’re unable to do this or you’re reading this after we’ve moved and there is an old PM you really need to recover, please drop us a line at firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll see what we can do for you.
Q Will I still get notifications?
A Yes – in fact, you’ll probably find you’re getting more than before (you can always reset this, if you’d like). When you first arrive on the new Chat platform, you’ll get both pop-up and email notifications for all the threads you started, all the threads you’ve bookmarked (see above) all the threads you’ve posted on, as well as notifications when someone else has mentioned/tagged you (with an @) on a thread.
If that all sounds like too much, you can opt to switch some or all of them off or to restrict you notifications just to email or pop-up. You can control all of this in your Notification preferences (click on the hamburger/3 lines icon, click on your username, scroll down and click on the little pink icon by your name and select Edit profile, then click on Notification preferences).
Q What if I have a question that isn’t answered here?
A Then you’re more than welcome to drop us an email at email@example.com (we answer every mail that comes in). Or you could post in Chat under Site questions and suggestions.
Once you’ve signed in to the new Chat platform, you can tag us (@DanielleMFM and/or @HelenMFM) in a post over there and we’ll come and answer you pronto!
