Blue Valentine and Dawson’s Creek actress Michelle Williams rarely opens up about her life beyond the spotlight.
And it’s even more rare for the 36-year-old star to talk about her 11-year-old daughter Matilda Rose – whose father was the late Hollywood actor Heath Ledger.
Heath and Michelle fell in love on the set of Brokeback Mountain, and they had Matilda in October 2005. But Heath died in January 2008, when Matilda was just 2.
He and Michelle had split just months before he died.
In a new cover interview with Porter magazine, Michelle shed some light on their lives without him.
“In all honesty,” she says, “for pretty much everything, I feel like I’m a believer in not fighting circumstances, in accepting where you are and where you’ve been. In pretty much all senses but one: I would be able to go totally down that line of thinking – were it not for Matilda not having her dad.
“You know, that’s just something that doesn’t… I mean, it just won’t ever be right.”
But, despite touching on such deep sadness during the interview, the former Dawson’s Creek star was also able to see the funny side of being a single mum.
“Talk about a learning process. I think… God, what would I say about it?
“I feel really sensitive about it and certainly did not expect to still be dating at 36 with an 11-year-old.
“My friend Busy [Phillips] and her husband Marc said, ‘Michelle, you’re in like a blackout zone, everybody is now partnered up and you have to wait for people to start getting divorced.’
“Oh my f***ing God. Are you kidding me? I’m just sitting around and waiting for marriages to crumble?
“Oh wow! No!“
