The standard of nursery food will be looked at amid fears children under five are being fed high-fat meals with adult sized portions.
Despite restrictions put in place on school meals after TV chef Jamie Oliver’s famous turkey twizzler campaign, a new government backed report has recommended new nutritional standards should be issued to nurseries. This should stop children under five being given fatty and salty lunches during nursery.
The report from the Government’s School Food Trust said nursery school meals are “too high in fat, sugar and salt and low in essential nutrients”.
The report went on to add that, “portion size information for children aged one to five years had been identified as one area where there is a lack of guidance and misinterpretation of existing guidance.” For example, portion sizes suitable for adults given to children in early years.
On the back of this report, the Government has announced that a panel of experts will be reviewing current standards, reporting their recommendations in August.
